I'm sure all the teams that passed on Warren Sapp are glad they dodged that bullet.

Failed drug test at combine. Looks like he'll be there at 14
FWIW
John Clayton said this morning that it might take him out of the top five, but that he was too talented to fall out of the top ten.

oh, I get it. You pulled out one player in a long history of the sport with players failing drug tests, and since he was successful that means all are successful
OK. Let's look at the facts. The leak of Sapp testing positive for Kokane was erroneus and disputed by the league, Sapp and his agent. Basically, he tested positive for the hippy lettuce...
quote:
The League quickly issued a statement saying that the report was erroneous, and that Sapp had not tested positive for cocaine, but their backpedaling did not address the marijuana question. Sapp and his agent denied that he had ever tested positive for cocaine, and Sapp told Price that he was willing to submit to weekly drug tests by any team that drafted him. The damage was done, however, and he dropped out of the top five, losing what was potentially a $4 million rookie contract.
Sapp's history
Now, please don't come here acting all sarcastic when you pick out one player of many and make that your case. I mean, have we forgotten Ricky Williams? What about Koren Robinson? David Boston? Pacman Jones?
With that said, I think the Saints should be cautios with selecting Raji if he falls to them. Character is a big issue with the league and this team, and the last thing we need is to become the "Who Deys" for the New Orleans Bengals

No, but it's also not guaranteed that he'll fail which is my point to the "drugs are bad mkay" crowd who seem determined to have absolutely nothing to do with him without a proper analysis of the situation.

you're right, but it doesn't mean he'll succeed as well. in this business, there is much riding on these high draft pics between money and need for success, and there isn't much of a barometer to measure what type of player a team is getting. these little issues that come up help define the character of the player being drafted, and it serves as a guide for a team to determine if they are willing to take a chance. when a team takes a player that they know failed a drug test, and that player later is a trouble player that is constantly suspended and causing distractions, then that team has only itself to blame.
for you to

Get off your high horse man. My response was to all the knee jerk reactions I was seeing that any suggestion of drug use is an automatic no go. I'm just saying don't miss a good player that ends up dropping past you just because you had your mind made up before even looking at the facts.

Teams have to choose which issues they can tolerate when drafting. There are very few players who come into a draft without any issues these days, and that is a fact.
If a team is going to draft players without any issues, then they will have a shelf w/o any Super Bowl trophies as well. Drafting a player into the NFL is not the same thing as hiring someone into a professional field. There are more athletes with issued than not. End of story.

Obvioulsy I misoverestimated how clearly the story of another top DL prospect that dropped to the teens over drug allegations suggested we shouldn't automatically reject Raji.

If it is only herb, that should not affect his draft status. More than that, he might not get drafted until the second day.
