Out of all the cuts, two were bad moves.

I completely understand why, while they all contributed greatly to the team, it was time to part ways with Harper, Smith, Vilma, and Moore ( ).
However, I think that Greer and especially Sproles are two guys that still provide immense value to this team. I know Greer is coming off a nasty injury, but countless athletes have come back from the same thing. He's a legit #1 corner, who would only have to be the #2 now with the emergence of Keenan Lewis.
As for Sproles, I've gotta say I'm pretty shocked at this one. The man is a dynamic weapon on offense, and a threat in the return game. Defenses have to scheme around him, because he can hurt you lined up in the slot, out wide, and in the backfield both as a receiver and a runner (especially on draws). He and Drew have developed a great rapport, and I'm afraid we''re going to be losing an integral part of the reason why our offense has been so effective the last few years.

Dude this ain't 2011. They were both on the rapid decline. One was coming off of a brutal knee injury. These were good moves by the team.

Did you watch the same 2013 season that i did?

Methinks his injury was pretty damn serious. I dont know if he can even come back from it and if he can i doubt he's still the same player. He didnt seem upset in the least when we let him go, which leads me to believe he left on amicable terms, meaning its probably questionable if he will even play next season.
Sproles will be 31 next season and is losing his speed and finesse. It was probably not the easiest decision but it was the rigth one. You cant keep the same guys forever. And this teams needs youth and depth. Greer had a brutal injury and will be 32 next season. Easier decision than sproles and we have a new DC and some young guys on D. Bring in another veteran corner/safety then draft and develop.
I havent been disappointed by the FO in the offseaosn yet. in fact im more excited than i have been in years.

Greer is going to be looking at a vet min type deal midway through the season, and I'd assume we'd be his first choice if that's all anyone is offering.
Sproles was the toughest cut of the offseason, though.

I think he meant a threat to our own special teams success. Which i agree with.

To use a new favorite quote from Bobby:
Yeah yeah, no Deke. The thing with Sproles is It's about tha what have you done fa me lately.

Sproles is the only guy I would want to keep out of all the cuts. However, he did not do anything in the return game this past season and very well may be on the decline and not worth the money.

if/when thomas gets cut, i think thats harder than sproles. pierre was still contributing last year and would make me feel more confident about having depth at RB. ingram looked great at the end of the year, but if he slacks, we are leaving ourselves in a trick bag. i understand the cut. it just seems like a gamble

Well. He hasnt been cut yet. So i'm correct.
But i agree.

yup. but i have no problem getting younger.

I think we'll pick up a guy or two to give us some depth. We might get a serviceable vet to split carries with the starters. I'd honestly be surprised if next year the actual starters are Ingram/ Robinson/ Cadet

Not to mention he was the only back we really trusted to pass block and effectively run the screen. And he caught more passes than Sproles and that's all Sproles can really do anymore.
The one knock on PT now is his run game is slowing down. But a lot of his work came early in the year when we had our struggles with the run game in general.

I agree. PT will be the toughest cut. But if he is cut i think we bring in another vet. Which doesnt make sense unless that vet is cheaper. We'll see.
But of all the RBs we have I want PT to stay. Way more than i wanted Sproles to stay anyway. But INgram and Robinson really turned it on last season. Maybe the light finally went on.

I have no problem turning the running game over to Ingram and Robinson. I'm more worried about the pass blocking, screen game, and catching out of the back field in general if PT is also cut.
Being that it hasn't happened yet gives me hope because they usually do these things in bunches.
But it could be that they are still trying to work things out and it's possible they don't get there.

Y'all make valid points about Sproles, but I still think he's a weapon on offense. I mean for fricks sake he can run a draw and then line up outside in an empty set and catch a back shoulder throw.
But what about Greer? Last year under Ryan, the Saints D finally solidified, and Greer was great at locking down the opposing team's #1 receiver. I don't see any reason why he can't come back now and handle their #2's.

He very well may. He was free to begin FA as soon as we cut him, but he doesn't exactly have teams lining up to sign him with his age and injury.
Posted on 3/8/14 at 1:10 pm to TigersforEver
The reason for Greer is the age, injury, and high contract number.
He was already losing a step. He struggled the last two years covering number 1s, but he did do well covering the 2s.
But we can get a guy on the cap this year cheaper, younger, and without the injury concern. There was no logical reason to keep him.
On Sproles, I totally agree he was still a receiving threat and the occasional draw/outside run would work, but for his price tag and minimal use we could do better.
Again, age and price played a huge factor in letting Sproles go. Remember he didn't do near as well in San Diego without Brees before coming here.
We can get similar(even if slightly less) production for younger and cheaper.

Dude. You need to go look at greers injury again. The guy is having a hard time walking right now. You don't think our medical staff took a hard look at him? I think Greer himself even knows how bad his injury is

Agreed. But Ingram is actually not bad in the blocking game. ANd like i said i think we bring in a cheap serviceable vet if PT goes.

Or see if they can get an oline and a TE to block. If they cant do that then we need blocking RBs

It's business plain and simple. Sometimes you have to cut guys who can still play.....I think we would all agree sproles doesn't suck all of a sudden.
