Sure, on paper or by the order of his board, you would technically be trading down for multiple "lesser players" as Loomis puts it, but superstars (ie: Kamara, Jimmy G, Jahri, etc) can be found in later rounds, and giving up a 1st rd pick can quadruple those chances when you gain multiple Day 2 picks.

At the end of the day, players are not defined by where they are drafted. The HOF is not just made up of first round draft picks.

A good front office knows their roster, and they take their resources (draft choices and salary cap money) to improve this roster for next season.

There are multiple ways to do that, and trading down is one of them.
