Is this 2002 all over again?

In 2002, the Saints were 9-4 with three games to go. The teams left on the schedule were (at the time the Saints played them)

Minnesota (3-10)
Cincinnati (1-13)
Carolina (6-9)

The Saints were fresh off a sweep of the Tampa Bay Bucs and needed those Bucs to lose just one and the Saints win out and they would be NFC South Division Champs.

The Bucs did their part and lost one of the last three to the Steelers, but the Saints did not do their part in winning out. In fact, they lost all three of their remaining games and were exiled from the 2002 season altogether.

This season, the Saints are once again 9-4 with three games remaining against teams with lesser records.

NYJ 5-8
ATL 8-5
TB 4-9

The difference between 2002 and 2017 is the Saints do indeed control their own destiny in the NFC South, as they have the tiebreaker against a team they swept (Carolina). The Saints would have a tiebreaker over Atlanta if they win on Dec 24, but would only need it if they lost two of the last three (Carolina would need to lose the same, though). Hopefully another difference will be that the Saints won out versus losing out as they did in 2002.

Will this be another 2002? Will the Saints lose three heartbreakers in a row, or will they finish strong and hang another Division Championship banner in the Superdome? Only time, will tell.

Put me down for 11-5 and a playoff berth.

Brooks shoulder was hurt.
Delhomme should have been put in. Saints looked like the best team in the league through 8 games that year.

The point is:

In 2002, the Saints were 9-4.

In 2017, the Saints are 9-4.

Hopefully, the 2017 finish will be the exact opposite outcome of 2002.

That's when Haslett was dead to me. He lied about Brooks' shoulder and could have put in Delhomme. We lost because of that a-hole...

That was probably as mad as I've ever been as a Saints fan. Brook's was basically bouncing balls to receivers and couldn't do crap.

2002 was the year I always wondered what could have been. Then 2011 happened.

Ugh, you're bringing back a lot of bad memories for me.

Jake Delhomme was starter-quality.

Was at the Carolina game that year. Brooks was hurt and Haslett kept him in with the crowd cheering “We want Jake”.

With that said, being a fan who’s old enough to say he was in Tulane stadium for Gilliam’s KO return, I’ve seen more painful losses that I care to remember. I never go into watching a Saints game without some doubt they could lose.

AB's shoulder injury was obvious to everyone except Haslett.

I just can't see us losing to the QB-less Jets in the Dome.
Tampa is a stretch too.

We HAVE to beat Atlanta next weekend. Not just to make the playoffs but to erase last Thursday night from my memory.

This was my first saints game as a kid. I vividly remember a chick drunkenly yelling “we want jake!” the entire game

So any team that's 9-4 will have that outcome?

Please. He was never going to be an NFL caliber QB.
