I forwarded this thread to Lt Columbo. He wrote me back:

"The 'All because of his name' quote proves beyond all doubt the poster is a ranter. You can use that line against Peyton or Eli, but not about Archie in 1978.

Case closed."

Archie Manning attended the University of Mississippi and was the starting quarterback at Ole Miss for three years. In the first national prime time broadcast of a college football game (1969), Manning threw for 436 yards and three touchdowns, also rushing for 104 yards, in a 33-32 loss to Alabama. That 540-yard performance is still tied for the SEC record for most total yards in a game.

quote:

After his college career at Ole Miss, Manning was drafted in the 1971 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints with the second overall selection.
He was very highly praised coming out of college. The whole nation feel in love with him because of that game on national TV. So yes because of his name you stupid frick

Player of the Year and Two Pro Bowls...on a team that NEVER had a winning record. Name another QB in the league who did that?

He was the best player on the team for ten years.

Name another Saints QB, not named Brees, who went to two pro bowls?

So, it's not just cuz his name is Manning.

And Jim Plunkett was the first, as well as being the Heisman Trophy winner. His name did a lot for him.

Whatever "name value" Manning had coming out of college was long gone by 1978, because the team was so shitty. Howard Cosell publicly said he didn't want the Saints on MNF b/c they were so horrible -- doesn't say much for Archie's all-powerful name.

You just proved my point

Didnt say he wasnt, we sucked balls then.

Because the entire NFL and its fans hated the Saints until Katrina happened. So just because people on the Saints didnt go to the Pro Bowl doesnt mean they didnt deserve to. There have been plenty people who should have went to the Pro Bowl who didnt like Will Smith last year for instance.

I really couldnt care less if you wanta go suck off Archie, Peyton, Eli and Cooper. Your opinion is he was some sort of football God, mine is he was a good player but no where near what people make him out to be. Who fricking cares? So you and Maverick can shut the frick up and go back to the damn LSU side of this site.

No, just the Saints' best pre-Drew QB. I'll quote somebody who knows almost as much about football as you do:

For the era he was in, Manning was the only bright spot on a horrible, HORRIBLE team. That, in itself, will sear a brand into any fan watching at that time. You grew up with that being your hero, it's hard to admit that you can't make a case for him not be the best Saint.

He's one of them, I know that. He's in the top 5, imo. But, is he the greatest? Of course not. Anybody in their right mind will realize the greatest player has to be Drew Brees. It's a toss-up for the positions underneath him.

This may be true, but he wasnt he was a Saint and did nothing to make us better. The original question was the best SAINT
0f all time. Hell Hebert got us to our first playoff appearance and Brooks won our first one so both of them did more for the SAINTS than Archie did.

I agree Archie was overrated, so much was expected of him when he got drafted, kinda like Reggie when we drafted him, and even though I love Reggie he hasent done what he was supposed to but hes still a huge NFL star because of his name.

How do you know he did nothing to make the Saints better? You have no way of knowing one way or the other.

Not on a first ballot, I would think. But, to use your summarization, we have no way of knowing this.
