I think going out of town for training camp really helped this team.

For many reasons, I think being away from Metairie for training camp really helped these guys gel as a team and has contributed to the fast start.

I feel like some of the benefits were:

Not dealing with the heat and associated stress.
Less media allowing for time to work out of the spotlight.
Ability to install the new offense with less cameras, eyes, and fans around.
Being able to keep reporters under control.
Keeping the guys together on a campus should have allowed more time for the guys to gel as a team.

The only negative I see is the fans not getting to see the team in training camp but I don't mind that at all if it helped us get off to this kind of start.

Andy Reid takes the Chiefs out of town and does an out of the spotlight training camp every year. He comments on how it improves team building.

Moving forward, do you think the Saints should continue going out of town for training camp?

Yes they should, then come home and do a couple “event” practices like at Tulane.

All the interviews I’ve listened to about camp said it was hard because they were able to be more efficient and get more work in

St. Joseph isn't exactly "away" from KC. True, it's northwest of the KC metro and about a 30 minute drive, but fans are always allowed to watch most of the practices. In fact, most of the practices have a fan event of some kind (like featuring a couple of players each day for photos and signatures).

What he DOES do right, though, is properly manage the fan/team interaction during camp. Tickets are free to get in to camp practices, but you have to request them and there's usually a waiting list. Team/public interactions are carefully managed, and the press has times/places where they're allowed to be - and times/places where they're NOT allowed to be there as well.

All in all, the Chiefs have done a magnificent job with their preseason camp regimen in St. Joseph. If the Saints replicate that model, I don't doubt that it's helpful for both the team and the public.

But what Andy does with the Chiefs for camp is a far cry from "taking them out of town and out of the spotlight".

Thanks for the education. I heard Mahomes and Kelce talking about getting away to St. Joe and how it helps them bond as a team.

I assumed it was a similar get away as the Saints did, but I don't follow much Cheifs training camp. Now I know.

All and all, I do feel the Saints low key, pretty much closed, camp benefited them. Especially when installing a new offense. I follow the Saints closely and getting camp info this year was tough compared to the others that are open to the fans.

I think there's a lot of benefit to controlling fan and press exposure during camp, and the Saints probably did benefit a lot from a more secluded setting.

If nothing else, it helps to keep expectations (good AND bad) from setting in before the season even starts. What the Chiefs do right is also involve the public when it makes sense to do so, and in ways that aren't detrimental to the team.

Hopefully, the Saints can replicate their off-season camp success going foward.

I remember it was frowned upon at one time.

I remember the early days when the Saints practiced at St Paul’s in Covington.
