I don't really see any way in hell that they can "fix" our defense this year as I think it will take at least two to three years of drafts and free agency to get the needed personal no matter who is coaching. We have a Ferrari offense and a pinto defense in my opinion. AS good as Coach SP is on offensive talent we have been average at best with defensive talent. We have lets say five years left with Drew, so my question is this. Should be continue to do what we have done with prior drafts and take an offensive player here and a defensive player here or should be go for wholesale defensive changes and draft almost exclusively defensive help. Or stated another way can we improve defensive enough in one year to help or we just better off to try to get another 3-4 points out of offensive and just try to get some improvement out of the defense.

if we draft tavon austin, we don't need a defense to take the field. We just let them score the they key is to winning is scoring last.

NFL is a league that teams can do a 180 from one season to the next. See 08 defense vs 09 defense.

We can have an opportunistic 09 type year out of nowhere this season and make a run. People get caught up in the moment of "what have you done for me lately" -Bobby Hebert
I think we will be middle of the pack defensively and will make a run.

In the beginning of this season we were missing a head coach, a lb coach, an assistant defensive coach, two veteran starters and team leaders and switched defensive coordinators.

That's frickin rough.

Our defense this year actually played pretty well alot of times. Then we would not adjust playcalling or the line would fall apart or the corners would blow zones and the coach didn't appear to change anything. That was our biggest problem last year. Coaching. On every side of the ball.

This year, our ferocious head coach is back, a guy who will play to the strengths of our defensive players is here, we are switching back to alot of man coverage which is what every corner on our team plays best and we won't be missing half our fricking coaching staff.

Blitzes will be back. We added two great players already in Lewis and Butler, and we aren't missing anyone.

Our defense plays it's best under a fat goofy loudmouth risk taking clown. I'm hyped on Ryan. I'm jacked up that Payton is back. And i can't wait to be back in the Dome.

Game fricking on

I can't wait for next season to start.

and a pinto defense

That's a really shitty thing to say about pintos BTW.

We stink evaluating rookie talent on the def side of the ball as we all know. But the cupboard is not bare and all we need is a middle of the road def to contend. As fast as spags took us down I am sure RR can get us up

I would say draft BPA on board instead of need, but I do know that this defense needs more playmakers all around. we just need a middle ranked defense that is oportunistic. CSP knows he will have to run the ball more this year to protect the defense and take less pressure off Drew. By doing this we control the ball and put less pressure on our defense. I think the change to 34 gives us more speed on the field and especially on the edges where we have been killed in the past with the 43 DE.

We only need a middle of the pack defense to be successful as a team. It's very possible to go from last to 15th in one off season, especially with a schematic makeover.

Also, I'm convinced that last year's defensive numbers are skewed. In my opinion, the players did not play at 100% because they did not believe in Spags and some players straight up hated him. (no link) It's hard to be that bad on accident!

Honest answer: It's very possible to bring this defense back to the middle ranks which is enough to win, given our top 5 offense. (see 2009)

E-DIRT OUT!!

Step away from the edge of the bridge. It'll be ok. We've added a few good players already and everyone is back this year. CSP and Ryan will handle business. We'll have a productive draft and we'll contend next season. Relax.

they went from 13th in points allowed and 24th in yds allowed in 2011 to 31st & 32nd. Most thought the personnel was improved before last year. It should improve more after this draft. No reason why it couldn't turnaround back to just that 2011 standard, muchless even better than that. The '09 season they were only 13th & 25th as well. This team gets a first round bye if the defense just begins to approach average.

If we get mingo jordan or ansah. We will win the superbowl. I can GURANTEE IT. We have already got a few free agents

THE PROBLEM LAST YEAR WAS OUR DEFENSIVE COORDINATORS SCHEME. ROB RYAN IS GUNNA BE CHILL AS HELL AND HE IS GUNNA LET THEM PLAYAS DO WHAT THEY WANT BOI! The defence will be top 15 next year

3-4 > 4-3. That will also be an improvement!

What the hell did I just read? Bro, do you even spell?

As stated by many, our defense just needs to be OK. 2010 the Saints had a top 5 defense, I'm not lying about it either. I'm serious. Brees played hurt, and for whatever reason the offense just didn't click. In 2011 the offense was better than ever, and the defense was mediocre; that also led to a 13-3 record. 2009 the Saints were OK defensively yards wise, but they made key stops and forced turnovers along with being ridiculously opportunistic.

I have no doubt in my mind that Payton will bring a lot of fire back to this team, and will be looking to arse rape the league. The offense will be much improved and disciplined. The play calling was so lackluster last season, it put the defense in a bind. Do you think we'd lose to KC with a lead like that with Payton coaching? Not a chance. The offense will be unpredictable again with Payton callin' the plays.

I was also hesitant of the Ryan hire, but the more I see and read of the guy the more I like the signing. He's a players coach, he's like that big tittied Gregg Williams; but more hair. They will want to play for him, and he'll put them in spots tooth strengths. The 3-4 fits the personnel much more than a 4-3.

I don't think we will see anything like the 49ers defense, but we will see a major improvement. Can't get any worse, right? The offense and defense have something to prove. IF the defense reaches anywhere from 15-20 in ranking, this team is winning 11 games minimum, but more likely around 13 wins. Just have a feeling this will be a special season.

We're still going to give up yards and points. Hope for more turnovers.

We have never been a good defense, but a decent and opportunistic one at times, but it my opinion GW is an under appreciated coach and the reason he blitzed so much is that we just didn't have the talent to play it straight. I think he really did a lot with a little.

But the rule changes have made it almost impossible to play great defense anyway as shown by the playoffs this year when all the "great" defenses got torched game after game. With that said I just don't want to have to have the ball last or be up by two touchdowns with a minute left to have any chance to win.

We have not gotten pressure on opposing QB's with our front 4 (or 7)in so long I have forgotten what it looks like. You have to be able to do that to have any chance, in my opinion.

Maybe there are some pieces that we can grab to accomplish this. I hope so.

Somethings that hurt the defense last year:
1) No head coach. Team in general disarray.

2) A switch to a zone scheme. Was a poor fit for the secondary and the linebackers.

3) Relied too much on generating pressure with the front four. The guys who could do it (Galette, Hicks for example) didn't see enough playing time. Ellis retained his starting job all year.

4) An offense that sputtered at times for long stretches, including TO's and the running game being nonexistent at times.

I really think Spag's system would have been successful eventually but it would take a lot more
time to get the right personnel. The switch to a one gap 3-4 press man scheme gives us the best chance for success in the immediate.

The one thing you can bet on is the D will be better than last year.

And the O will be sick!
