Has there ever been a more media savvy athlete than Brees?

He has walked between the raindrops of this Bounty scandel to be a highly compensated endorsement machine for Concussion awareness (Dicks Sporting Goods), embarked on what amounts to a national media tour wherein his contract negotiation questions are deftly fielded and deflected with no apparent rancor toward the club, and has vocalized anti-league sentiment regarding issues ranging from Lockout to Bounty Smear campaign, all with little or no damage to his impeccable reputation.

Even Peyton Manning suffered some backlash after throwing his offensive line under the bus a time or two. Remember the "We had some protection issues" remark after that painful playoff loss.

Judging by the fact that over 2/3 of the comments about DB9 on ESPN and PFT are negative (and the positive ones have tons of "thumbs downs") I'd say "yes, there have been more media savvy athletes than Brees".

Frankly I'm annoyed with him for Saints-fans reasons (I support Benson and Loomis and trust that they've offered him fair deals for several years now). I also think it's kind of shitty for a guy who is going to be making over $25MM a year counting his endorsements to open a chain sandwich shop in the middle of small local business country as well. I know you've got to look out for your post-career income, but open that shite in Metairie or the Northshore, not in a historic small business neighborhood in the heart of Po Boy country.

I think it is a stupid location as there is essentially no parking, customers tend to sit on Maple Street so you have slow turnover and his establishment would need some drive up business to justify the investment, but the local poorboy makers can compete with his sandwiches.

He lives uptown he wants a presence uptown, its his money to invest. That is a foolish complaint on your part.

Full disclosure: I do love my some Jimmy Johns up here. But come on man - that's like opening a PF Chang's in the French Quarter.

Really disappointed that he got neighborhood approval.

No it is not, Maple Street =/= FQ and the FQ has much worse than a PFC.

I don't detect any resentmnet from the businesses or residents around Maple Street. He has no parking waivers, no alcohol permit, not being open particularly late, he's opening a food outlet in a place with a lot of food outlets. It is NFBD. He has hit no hot button issue for that area.

Maple Street is a unique street though. It's not fair to label it as simply "uptown". It's closer to a FQ vibe than it is to Uptown.

Brees has a very likable personality and he just so happens to be on of the best QBs on the planet.

He's no MJ or Tiger Woods as far as the media is concerned, but he's up there.

Shaq is on Barkley's level when it comes to media savvy.

Which is pretty damn good.

It's Painfully obvious you don't live in new Orleans. I wonder if you were this vocal when they put a Starbucks on maple street or on magazine st

Here is a list of small businesses on magazine st

Popeyes
Sherwan Williams
Ace hardware
Walgreens
Shell

I could go on and on

Yeah it's like putting a Krystal burger on bourbon st

Btw, what does Pierre masperos, Pete Antoine's or the numerous shite hole restaurants with terrible food add to the FQ

I love Brees, but he has all the qualities of a great politican, including the occasional simplified overreach delivered with conviction. I think he's authentic in his conviction, but it easily rubs some people the wrong way. He'll still be Mayor of New Orleans whenever he decides to run.

There's no chains on Maple Street, dumbass.

Gas stations don't fricking count - that's the most retarded argument I've ever seen in my entire life.

"Shell". GTFO.

It's a fair point but Starbucks is world renowned for integrating into the architecture and ambience of its surrounding neighborhoods. They also offer world class benefits to their employees which is why they get a pass.

Jimmy Johns is not Starbucks but whatevers. I am in a losing battle here against you fanbois so I'll throw in the towel.

P.S. The Krystal and Popeyes, McDonald's etc in the FQ aren't in the area of the FQ that I was referring to. But again - whatever. They are in the strip club zone. Losing battle because it comes down to semantics and you'll crush me.

There are no McDonald's or Popeyes in the FQ. Outside of 3 or 4 restaurants and a handful of shops the FQ is complete crap as far as what is actually there. You don't live in NOLA, I'd wager to guess you have never live in NOLA so stop acting like you know what you're talking about.
