I think a big road block is Brees "image" that he wants to project. The Saints know he wont frick with that by holding out in a season where theyve had all this controversy and theres a chance of playing the superbowl at home
Agreed. Maybe Gronk banging pornstars is for his own benefit?

No they changed it in the new CBA
Its the average of the past 5 years franchise tags which cheapens it by a couple million

you are NOT paid according to the current year's top 5 anymore, it involves multiple past years and is lower than the franchise tag used to be.

They see me rollin'...
Seriously, I am willing to look past so much because he's an extreme talent.

Sho nuff.
Honestly, agreeing to a franchise option is terrible to begin with.
I can't wait til someone quits football over it after being tagged multiple seasons.

even with the emergence of Jimmy Graham, I agree. Even though he has been nicked up over the years, he has been so consistent
I'm going to hate seeing Colston leave, but it's not huge. Graham and Colston were 1a and 1b in this offense and the saints didn't even slow down on offense in the games he missed. We will have to draft a receiver relatively early now though.

I just pray there is some master plan behind this. We are usually great with contracts and decision making.
I'm not that educated about the yearly salary cap, but to me I would think they need to raise it a decent bit. Not anything ridiculous, but with every great position player getting a contract that is a step above the last great player, it doesn't leave much room. Simple inflation right? Am I far off with this?

Yes and no.
The salary cap is designed to keep prices down, and in a baseball style environment, Peyton, Brady, and Brees would be making at least 30 million a year, if not more. That being said, if you keep raising it by a ton of money, it loses its effect. Teams also tend to backload contracts so they can cut the player and only be on the hook for guaranteed money. It has a decent increase next year if I remember correctly.

No doubt. Cant stay mad at a guy when hes catching 20 TD passes
Btw Is there anyway we can put a bounty on Bernard Pollard? I feel like nobody would get in trouble for that. Eye for an Eye type situation

I can understand the front office's predicament. 23 mil a season for the next three seasons is just pushing it. Hopefully something can be worked out.

This guy first.

I would let Drew walk if he had to have that much money. The saints are going screwing themselves if they do it.

Someone with more knowledge than me please answer this...
If Brees is FT this year and risks possible FT the year after... the value of both of those years is substantially less than if he signed a K for less than the 23mm he was asking. To me, that is not good business.
Why not negotiate the 18mm deal...now he's gauranteed to be throwing the difference of the FT and the Saints offer out the window. That's 4mm for possibly 2 yrs...that's almost stupid

I'm still baffled why this deal wasn't done 2 years ago

If he's really demanding $25 million this was inevitable
He's not demenading $25 mil. I don't know what's so hard about this shite. Brees basically wants Mannings contract.....$23 mil per year for the first three years with an average of $18 mil per for the lifetime of the contract.
That's Mannings contract and that's what he wants. People saying he wants $25 mil, $30 mil just isn't true. Brees wants what another top QB has already gotten....is he wrong for that? Well that's for you to decide but saying he wants something that's crazy money over anyone else is just not correct and plain wrong.

IF the Saints had the balls to frick over Drew Brees by tagging him two straight years, the city would revolt and Brees would hold out and go elsewhere, you realize that right?
