Would you be shocked if they didn't want to pay Nicks a large sum of money? I wouldn't. WHy? Because it is quite ridiculous to have that much money tied up in 2 guards.

But why not if you can afford it?

Im sorry, he'll have to have a PRO BOWL type year to command a high dollar. He hasn't had one yet.

He was good last year and had a Pro Bowl caliber year in 2009. He just missed four or five games, which killed his chances. In the 14 or 15 games he played in, he allowed a whopping 0 TDs, was key in the defense being 3rd in the NFL in terms of opposing QB rating, and had a memorable play or two in the playoffs. Look at Dunta Robinson. He had a few (overrated a bit) Pro Bowl years, had a down season or two, and got paid 6/$57m without a bullshite balloon year like Nate Clements got.

maybe so. Ask me next year when it matters

We may not have the money when it matters. Like Blues has posted before, we're 16-3 in games where Porter/Greer start together. He's very important to our team.

The fact that you only thought originally that Bush would free up $8mil tells me that you went back and read up.

I thought he had an $8m base and $4m from the signing bonus. I was $4m off on the base salary, but that doesn't mean I have no idea how the cap works. I've already admitted to being wrong about that (just like I was wrong about Ellis, I thought he was a FA next offseason until double checking last night.)

The $4m definitely helps, but it's not a huge difference considering the players we should try to keep on the team. Without knowing his contract layout, I still wouldn't rule out cutting Bushrod next season if we get a chance to give Brown some gametime and see how he performs. His signing a 2 year deal definitely tells me he didn't get the kind of offer I thought he would with so many teams having to spend bank to get to the cap floor. Carolina spent big and they should be close KC signed Rice, but they and especially TB/Cincy have a long way to go.

if they can afford to pay 2 guards top money, then so be it. Guards tend to be pretty replaceable. With already having 1 elite guy, it would ease the pain to lose someone like Nicks.

Im well aware on how good he is. I doubt they let him walk unless someone steps up this year.

I rather pay our guards than Bushrod if push came to shove. Bushrod was a priority I suppose but he just doesn't seem like a long-term solution. If it wasn't for Brees ability in the pocket, there'd be alot more sacks coming from the left side.
