Cut salary a good bit for this year and trimmed some next year too. Article has us at ~2.8 mill under cap before spiller signing.
Nola
Original Nola article had it at 4.4 cut... #journalism

Ellerbe's base salary will be $1.1 million instead of $8.5 million in 2015. He also agreed to amend his 2016 salary from $6.45 million to $4.1 million and his 2017 salary from $6 million to $4.1 million, records show. It's not clear if the Saints sweetened the deal with any bonuses.

#Saints LB Dannell Ellerbe will make $4.9M fully gtd this year ($1.1M base, w $1.5M signing, $2.1M roster bonuses). $5.2M avg next 2 years

Still too damn high, but that's better than nothing. Hopefully this dude plays much better here than he did in Miami.

Sweet... this makes that trade MUCH better now. At first, I could not understand how Loomis/ Ireland could justify paying this guy $8.5 million per year. Hopefully he turns out to be the player he was in Baltimore

@nick_underhill: Don't have all the details yet, but Ellerbe's bases over the next three years are now $1.1M, $4.1M, and $4.1M. Were $8.425M, $6.45M, $6M.

@MikeTriplett: #Saints LB Dannell Ellerbe's contract has been restructured as expected. 2015 base salary down from $8.45M to $1.1 but not sure about bonus.

Go figure the NOLA article would get the facts wrong.

4.1 is too high. Hope they're wrong and it's filled with incentives instead.

Unless there was a signing bonus, or a portion of the contract was guaranteed, if he does not live up to the contract the team can cut him w/ no cap implications.

Meh. 4.1 might as well be 14.1 if its not guaranteed what does it matter as he can be cut with no penalty if his play is poor.
1.1 number is very good for this year though

May want to change the numbers on the OP where we do have to listen to everyone bitching when they come in here.
Oh never mind you already did.

This. Also, he didn't live up to the hype in Miami, but there are at least some excuses you can make on his behalf and a positive to take away. He switched from a 3-4 middle which he played his whole time with Baltimore to a 4-3 middle. He struggled to make the transition at first but did improve towards the end of 2013 (he was hurt all of last year). One positive take away though is that over 2013 he began to excel at pass coverage which is something a linebacker hasn't been able to do here for some time.
Seems like it would make more sense to have him back in the 3-4 and shorten the field up for whoever plays middle opposite of him. All in all, not to shabby regardless how it shakes out when you consider the fact that we got this plus a third for a 5th rounder.

Still a little too high, but it's not absurd. The good news is if he isn't producing we can just cut him and make Humber the starter. That is if he even beats out Humber and Hawthorne to begin with. He should at least be on the field for 3rd down. We don't have 1 ILB that can even cover average. They all suck and he's actually pretty decent at it.

If he can regain his pre-miami form then this is a steal but I know that's asking for a lot

He only played in one game last year. The year before (2013) he played better than what he did in Baltimore.

Dude Humber is fast but that's about all he's got going for him....His PFF numbers were absolutely terrible last year....he overruns and misses tackles often....I like him and hope he can improve, but from what I saw last year he isn't exactly pushing for a starting job and that's saying something....he kind of reminds me of Johnathan Casillas in that in the preseason he shows up and looks great but in the regular season games against all the 1's it really shows that he is a level below starting

Oh frick yeah. That sweetens the deal even more.

I agree. That's why I hope Ellerbe wins the job. He has the potential to be a solid starter. I like Humber as a backup ILB/special teams guy...if Humber is the starter, then we're in trouble. And if Ellerbe can't beat out Humber, then he needs to be cut.
