its tough to find anything concrete anywhere on how much he makes

andy reid just got an extension that pays him a base of about 5 mil. Payton deserves a little more than that IMO

But paying him the market rate for a qb of his caliber is only fair.

I agree 100%.

Here's the problem: what is the true market rate?

If you use the Rivers, or Eli Manning, extension as the barometer, the team could be mortgaging it's future for the next 10 years. These monster contracts are the reason we're about to go into an uncapped year and possible "lock out" in 2011, isn't it? What will the salary cap look like (if one ever reappears) down the road? What if the future cap is rolled back to $120 mill and you have $20 mill tied up in one player?

There's a bunch of questions. The only answer I know is that Brees will be here for a long time. Whatever the cost, the Saints have to pay.

like someone said earlier we can front load the shite out of that contract to be paid in the next year and be getting a bargain for him in the future. I think we'll have to see what Manning gets first and then the Brees extension domino will fall

You do realize that Payton makes $8 mill a year, right?

I didn't say coaching staff, I said front office

I'd approve of TAF kicking in 400-500k of his salary if he agrees to come down every offseason and host a passing camp for our coaches and players

Nope. Owners opted out of the current CBA way before these 2 got their contracts

The existing CBA will still be in effect dealing with front loaded contracts. If a player's salary is less than 50% of the previous year's salary, the difference is treated as a signing bonus and pro rated over the length of the contract. It'll be a cap number either way.

The reference "these monster contracts" was made in terms of all of the contracts, not limited to Rivers and Manning.

Good to know.

Still makes Miles overpaid by comparison, though.

Brees is not a money whore. I would even think he works with them to keep the quality of the team right if it means just a few dollars off of his number.

no he isn't but I don't care who you are you want to be paid on the same level as your peers. Jamarcus fricking Russell makes more than him.

He will be paid, but I guarantee he won't be a grouch spoiled crybaby bitch if he has to sacrifice a few dollars to keep the team solid.

The share of the pie that all the players get a slice of, is the issue. Not individual contracts. It's the NFL who cares what a contract for an individual is worth when you can cut him and be done with it.

If monster individual contracts were the problem then you would see the NFL proposing max type deals like the NBA
