If you look at trades in the last however many years, they definitely "overpay" moving into the top 2 (which is why those picks have disproportionate values in the charts), but the after that it really isn't that crazy what people are trading.
It also depends where a team is moving from. If someone was coming from the early 20s to 8 then yes you are going to get more of a premium. Someone coming from only 12 to 8 isn't going to pay that same premium unless they are absolutely obsessed with a player (which is extremely rare these days you see a Ricky Williams trade unless it's for a QB).
I get and agree with what you are saying about what I'd like to see to consider a move, but I also don't think it's realistic, and I'd rather stay and take whatever player at 8 than move back to 12 and get a 3rd and maybe an extra later pick (like a 4th or next year's 3rd).
