I think the rain and cold made it harder for him to kick as far, and the coverage was terrible anyway, so he booted it up high to sacrifice yards for better/easier coverage, but the coverage team still failed.

I think that is fair to say. The last time I can remember the that coverage team playing that bad was the Cincinnati game back in 2010. It was a dreary afternoon then to (some rain, colder weather).
They didn't play as bad in that game as they did vs. the Giants but I remember them screwing the pooch a few times. They really helped Cincinnati stay in that game.
