So watching NOF’s show from today and Underhill said he went back and looked at the worst fade throwers in the NFL in the last 5-10 years or so. I can’t remember the other 3 (if he named them), but both Winston and Carr were on the list. I think Carr might have been the worst. Jameis isn’t playing, but Carr and the other 3 are. However, the other 3 haven’t thrown fades in multiple seasons. Somebody on their offensive staffs realized they weren’t good at, so they simply quit calling them. Took them out of the playbook. And we’ve just doubled down. Awesome.

But not quite as awesome as that pick 6 he threw being the 15th of his career. Good for 26th all time. In the entire history of the NFL, only 25 guys have thrown more pick sixes than Derek Carr. Sweet.

Yeah, that was my point as far as the fades. The eye test has shown in just 7 games in New Orleans that he is terrible at that throw. But more than that, there is years of data that prove it as well. Previous coaches of bad fade throwers—and it’s a hard throw, especially the closer you are to the goal line—have realized it, and simply quit calling it and removed it from their play books. It’s a terribly inefficient play altogether, but especially with Carr. Yet we’re dialing them up from the 6 3 or 4 plays in a row with plenty of time and 3 timeouts only needing a touchdown to tie. This is all on the coaches.

The pick 6 thing I just threw in there. I’m not sure that’s the indictment of Carr as it sounds on its face. First, you have to be good enough to have played long enough to be able to do that. Second, when you’re on bad teams that are trailing a lot (that could be an indictment on him, though), you’re prone to take more chances in trying to come back which often leads to turnovers. Third, there may just be some bad luck involved. I don't know. I'd have to do some research and analysis that I don't care to. My guess is it's a combination of those things I mentioned along with Carr just being a guy who puts the ball in harm's way inside his own territory more than most.
