His best years the the Saints had their best years, 7-9 and 8-8 in 78 and 79.
There was no free agency back then. The Saints were a terrible franchise that did not not draft well.

John Mecom was one of if not THE worst owner in the league at the time.He ran the Saints much like Al Davis runs the Raiders...managing drafts, meddling with play calling, and interfering with the coach's ability to do his job. I lay most of the blame on him.
BTW, my grandfather was the Saints' team physician in the early 70's and he actually recommended that they draft Jim Plunkett after conducting physicals on him, Archie, and Dan Pastorini. Apparently, Archie had taken a beating while playing for Ole Miss and my grandfather was worried about the continued wear and tear playing behind a horrible Saints o-line.

This thread is so ignorant i am surprised i am posting in it.
But i read Roger staub. as saying that "if archie would have played for the cowboys, he would have won 5-6 superbowls"
Just quoting

I think its been a good thread and has sparked some good opinions. The question wasn't whether or not the team held him back. That is obvious. The question was to what extent.

Archie's team held him back tremendously...
immeasurably...

I'm not sure how you quantify it, but when they had decent offensive talent around him they were OK. In 79 they went 8-8. The Rams won the division at 9-7 and went to the Super Bowl. The Saints had a big lead at the half on MNF against Oakland and blew it, there was a shot of Archie sitting on his helmet looking devastated.

I was at that game. I believe we were winning 28-7 at half and ended up losing 42-35. First time I ever wept after a Saints defeat. Unfortunately, it wasn't the last time.

I thought it was 35-7. either way it was a disaster on the defense. Archie and the O got 35 on a good Raider D

Wasn't the last game that year against the Rams in the dome? And the winner was going to playoffs? The Rams made a last second FG to win. I defintely cried after that one.

No, that was 1983
1990 the Saints kicked the game winner against the Rams to make the playoffs.
I just looked on pro fb reference and the Saints beat the Rams the last game of 79. Had they beaten the Raiders, that game would have been for the playoffs.

IIRC, the exact Staubach quote is "If I'd played for the Saints and Archie'd played for the Cowboys, he'd be the one in the Hall of Fame."
Also, NFL films did a feature on Archie which began "There may some question as to who is the best of the best, but there is no question Archie Manning was the best on the worst."

Screw him and his sons. I am so glad that Drew Brees will go done as the best QB in Saints history so everyone wil STFU about Archie.
What is the deal with douchebags who claim to be Saints fans but dis Archie?
I don't give a turd eating monkey frick if his kids didn't go to LSU. If you're still crying over it, take your vagina to the Rant.

Dead on
Great QB on a crappy team with one of the worst owners in team sport world history. This just won't die.

I'm not old enough to remember Archie playing but I do know that he played for a terribly run franchise and still gets mentioned among the best of those days.
What does bother me however is how, because of his bad experience, he felt he needed to engineer landing spots for both sons in the draft. He acted above the system and hand picked where they played.
It worked out great for both, of course. For this I put him and both sons in the same boat as players who demand trades by throwing a fit until they get what they want.

Good.
How would you like it if someone decided where you had to work?

Just watched a piece on NBC about Peyton and it mentioned frequently that Archie was the victim of some really bad Saint's teams. I have heard this all my life (born in '71). Doesn't he hold some responsibilty for how bad the TEAM was?? And yes, I remember the defense being bad back then but I think the extent to which the Saints supposedly held him back is often overblown.
I emphatically agree.

Imagine that the saints didn't fire Gibbs and kept Jason David and Josh Bullocks on D. So basically we'd keep repeating the last two years.
Wouldn't you agree that Brees was being held back by a horrible D around him? He's putting up ridiculous numbers, but the team is letting him down? You'd think it'd Drew's fault for not making the D around him better?
Seems to be the same type of situation Archie was in.... and I am too young to remember him playing, but I still know he's one of the greatest saints of all time.
