My only question with Hayes is his rebounding. If he really shows up and rebound the ball at a high level

his numbers rebounding are not bad. career avg 17 minutes and 4.3 boards.
4.5 in 20 minutes last year. so about 7 boards per 30. I presume your high level is 9 per game. he's close in ratio but isn't getting the minutes. wilt didn't come out of the game.
10 per puts you amongst the league leaders every year but the great ones were 12 and up.
the top few all time
wilt and Russell 22 per.
next petit 16 jerry Lucas 15
Barkley was round mound of rebound at 12.

That's not good at all. Now compare that to Hernangomez and you'll see how poor that is for this squad.

The gravity Zion has on the court is going to benefit Hayes the most. Hayes with room to get to the rim because 3 guys are helping on Zion is going to leave room for Hayes to get some monster dunks.

He is a valuable back up piece because we can stick him as a 4 or 5. His shooting is good, his 3% isn't elite but it is average for a forward and actually pretty good for a center. While he serves a role on the team he still has a HUGE upside on the potential. I don't think he reached his ceiling and I don't know if he will ever master all of his tools but the Pels are in the perfect position to keep a project player who can contribute as a back up. It might take him being traded to a bad team and playing 30 minutes a game to learn the game or flame out but I hope he improves on the Pels. If he can improve there is no reason he couldn't replace JV in a few years if he is still around.

You pretty much said Zion and our team can make project players better. Why should we spend 10 mil for a backup project player that may not reach his potential on our team when we can find another project players for 1/4 of the price?

You can input any player in the ____ to say Zion will help ____ get open looks because 3 guys will guard him. Defense is the deal breaker.

I don’t dislike him at all but should he be the reason we pay the tax and does he really bring qualities we can’t find elsewhere with similar potential?

We don’t know if we can stick him at the 5 against the better C’s in the league and that’s the biggest issue. He gets eaten up with fouls against the better C’s and doesn’t rebound as well as he should at his size. If he can’t start dominating boards or blocking good centers then it’s not worth it.

I think its interesting when you look at his +/- for each game last year, especially at the end of the year. His +/- was positive when it was a win and negative when we lost 30 of the last 36 games, playoffs included. Does that mean he's impacting our wins and losses that much?

This is interesting. What I think this implies is that Hayes typically plays well against lesser quality opponents. He’s not a cerebral player. Well coached, disciplined squads know how to manipulate him so his numbers are drastically worse against better opponents. This makes sense as to why he couldn’t be trusted with the same minutes he got during the regular season in the playoff series.

Don’t think he’s a negative player on the team as you 9th man so we don’t want to just dump him for nothing, but if he starts getting pouty about a smaller role then that changes things.
