Gobert, the DPOY, just shut down the entire league.

Some of you don't really understand anything about this virus. It spreads much more quickly and has a case fatality rate way higher than that of the flu. And it has been spreading for the past couple of weeks all across America. If hospitals become full with coronavirus patients, how are others who also need those beds (whether it be emergencies or what have you) going to fare? Bottom line is we don't want this spreading more than it already has. I'm not saying this is the end of world, but health>game and this is probably a smart decision by the NBA

So is the season over now or is there a chance they resume and have the season run longer into the summer? I’m not sure how that would even work but I’d imagine it’s doable.

Unless eveey single person locks themselves in a sterile environment for the next month, shite is pointless. Going to spread in different locations other than a basketball arena

Yes, but it's likely a few of those involved in the NBA process have been infected (every team that's played Gobert, media, etc.) and have spread it elsewhere. There are so many older coaches with weak immune systems, why not be precautious before every NBA player becomes infected with it

Entirely different Situation. Virus is going to spread, regardless. No matter what you do, there is always someone out there that won’t wash his/her hands and spread it. Unless you come set up camp in a sterile clean room, shutting down sporting events and buying packs of toilet paper won’t stop it.

Except it’s not. Like a hurricane we know ways to minimize the loss of human life. The ways to ensure economic harm is more contained in the short term than risking dire long-term effects.

I mean every thing we know and have historical evidence of says that your do nothing argument is complete bullshite. Whether it was taking draconian actions against disease carriers in ancient times or containment strategies that prevented pandemics from recent viruses.

You do nothing or fail to take action in a timely manner and you get Italy, where nearly 2500 cases were diagnosed just today. Where around 200 people died last night.

You take the right actions and you can smooth out the infection speed and volume and help minimize both the spread and pressure put on the medical systems that are the only defense mechanism we have. Where in Italy they are openly talking about how they are going to prioritize ventilators and other life saving mechanisms as the infection rate grows. Where because the system is overwhelmed even non-infected people are affected as resources have to be diverted to the immediate pandemic. Pushing back surgeries and straining life-sustaining care.

You’re wrong. Idiot fear mongers like the national media, have already caused people to buy up stupid shite that they don’t need. Now our hospital is having difficulty ordering masks, and PPE that we use in clean rooms, so its putting a burden on the HC system either way.

Quite simple to wash your hands, and stay home if you are sick and all of this could be avoided

This is absolute stupidity. It's not fear mongering when a virus that is much more contagious and more deadly than the flu is at risk of spreading to all of America. No shite preparation for a contagious illness is putting burden on the healthcare system. Facts are this has likely already spread to much of America, we just haven't tested enough for it yet.

That’s not an argument in defense of your prior position of nothing is no different than something. In fact, you seem to be switching up your argument, in that panic is actually making doing something harder.

Which is probably true, and I would agree, but also the natural cycle of something like this. Where panicked people rush first to buy up the things people are told help prevent the harm, then the people that may be more level headed recognize that the things they need to prevent harm are being bought up by panickers, so they need to rush as well. Then in addition to inventory crash, the natural actions to do something to resupply are mitigated by responsible actions and shortages happen.

The fear mongering of 2020 has been unreal. First they made people think we were going to WW3 now they making people think the worlds gonna die from something barely worst than the common cold

Well said. The number of confirmed cases in the US just doubled in a day. Italy went from 3 cases to the current situation in under 3 weeks. We now have 1321 confirmed cases in the US up from a little over 750 yesterday.

Sure it’s simple to wash your hands. The problem, however, is that it has been proven to be airborne and travels not only from coughing and sneezing, but also just breathing

This is quite significantly worse than the common cold and a legitimate reason for concern. With a player infected this is absolutely the right call until the situation is under control. Continuing mass gatherings while this continues to spread will cause thousands upon thousands of additional and avoidable infections and more people would die needlessly.

it's actually much worse than the common cold. It has a case fatality rate about 20 times more than the seasonal flu you're referring to.

I’m on a team managing a project where several of our engineering firms managers are agreeing to self quarantine from an Italy trip because the local process right now is so fricked , disorganized, and dearth of testing units that he couldn’t get space to get tested for several days and we had to ask him to stay off site given the money and sunk investment involved if this breaks out on our mega project.

So on the one hand it is almost certain that the numbers currently in the teens here are highly underreported due to lack of competent and adequate testing, but logic also tells me from the experience that those failures unfortunately provide opportunities for the disease to spread in the community. Especially on projects like this where people come from all corners of the community and even out of state. We’re concerned, our client even more so.

It has a 3.4% mortality rate compared to a .1% mortality rate of the seasonal flu, making it 34 times more deadly. This virus is also way more contagious. It's a cause for concern and there are many reasons to take precautions to try to mitigate the spread of this illness. So saying "it's not serious" is objectively a false statement and you're making yourself look like a jackass.
