Been searching but couldn’t find the answer. How can a team use a draft exception if under the cap, such as the Pelicans this year. Can they use up all the cap space, room exception, then use the draft exception? I have this question because I remember them using it on Buddy in 16 when we were an under the cap team. Or does the rooks salary use up the space?

There are all kinds of exceptions to the salary cap but I'm pretty sure that's not one of them. There are draft holds where 1st round picks take up space under the cap before being signed.

Generally speaking it's assumed you have all exceptions in place and you may have to renounce them to free up cap space so you can sign someone. Ball park figure if everyone opts in the Pels have $12 million in cap space. If they want to sign someone for $12 million they renounce exceptions like the MLE, Trade Exceptions and the BAE.

It’s called the rookie exception, this article says it doesn’t affect the cap for that year. Like I said, it was used on Buddy, just wanted more clarity. So you don’t have to use your space on the draft pick

You dont need to have cap space to sign your draft pick(s).
But cap space or different kind of exception can help you with giving additional year(s) to signing your 2nd round picks (there is no rookie scale for 2nd round).

I’m surprised that one has never come up here before, but I guess it’s because the Pels haven’t drafted much lately. It makes sense to have so teams over the cap don’t dig into their MLE to sign rookies. I would think it’d be subject to the general rule I mentioned before, you usually have to renounce all of the standard exceptions to use cap space. So if the Pels wanted to use that $12 million in cap space I mentioned on Free Agents, they’d need to save part of it to sign rookies. Since we might have multiple rookies to sign staying over the cap and using exceptions would make the most sense unless you dump Hill or Randle leaves.

Yeah the main reason I was looking into this was Randle. Can only keep him with a competitive salary if we use space/under the cap. Just don’t see how he stays unless he takes a discount, for example less than ~15m
