fletcher mackel(fwiw) explained today that Toronto was able to take on so much salary because they had the trade exemption and were so far under the cap, which is why it was able to be uneven. This in turn put the Hornets under the luxury tax and saved them money this year.

he just likes to hear himself talk, so it could be right, or it just could be BS. who knows.

They were over the cap, but under the tax. I'm not sure how it happened, I figured they'd have to use the Bosh exception but ESPN Trade Machine shows our new Peja trade exception and $12 million of their Bosh Trade exception. Derozan, Weems and Peja for Melo. Bosh trade exception, Bayless and a pick for Iggy. Toronto is back in business

If they didn't use the Bosh TPE on Peja, they would have had to first send two players to us using our TPEs to create enough room under the cap to make up for the difference between Peja's salary and their 3rd guy.

For that to work, they would have had to have been about 2.4 million under the salary cap before these deals. Most teams don't publish salaries and hoopshype and ESPN aren't always accurate, so I don't know if they were or not.

I'm sure Demps isn't the only person to use a cap loophole before, but he created that $9.7 million exception out of thin air.

No wonder the league is going broke
