If I was Holmgren, I'd stay at Gonzaga all 4 years. He is going to make really good money off NIL. He has little pressure. The team is going to be loaded. He can be a top 5 player in the sport for 4 straight years and build a great legacy. It's way less demanding than the NBA and he can physically develop without punishment.
Long story short, I do not believe he is going to be in this draft..

I cant see it happening.
the economics still just don't make sense.
The money spot in the NBA is your 2nd and 3rd contract.
Holmgren stays 4 years you are talking about him not only delaying a first overall pick compensation package(45ish million dollars), risk injury, but putting him on pace for being in is mid to late 20's before his second contract, near 30's for his third.
I think staying only really makes sense right now for a very specific type of player that has a low NBA ceiling but is college famous, and doesn't stand to get drafted very high or receive much in the way of sponsorship at the next level.

It's a good debate and of course you are mostly right. There are just guys that really love and relish playing on the college level. I could see Holmgren making 1M+ a year at Gonzaga. He would be living like a king there with a ton of money in his pocket.
With the NIL, I believe there are going to be guys that shock people and choose the lesser money in college. Its not all or nothing anymore. The NBA will always be there. Just a feeling I have..

Do you really pass up a guaranteed 30+ million to stay in college and risk injury for a million or less?
One bad injury in college and their career and earnings are gone

Do 19-20 year olds really think this way? They want to play basketball, have fun and win. Not plan for retirement. When you are playing for Championships for major programs it in an intoxicating experience. Now they are getting paid as well. It's going to be tempting to stay. It's an awesome life.
Tons of guys have elected to stay. Even his teammate this year Timme, who was a lock late 1st rounder. He is probably going to win some awards and they will make a run at the final 4. Holmgren is going to see all of that.
I'm not saying that he is staying. I would if I were him. I'd rather be a God on campus playing 40 games a year for good money. Rather than a scrub rookie for a lottery team playing 80+ games a year making a bit more. Chasing the money isn't always the best idea..

Timme is the type of player that in the future might make sense to stay.
Tankathon currently has him 42nd in their mock draft.
Not many players grow up thinking, man, I want to play in college four years. Most think, man, I want to get to the NBA and be a superstar.
And I don't care how old you are, if you are offered a path where you make 45 million over the next 5 years, or 5-10 million, the choice is pretty obvious.
Maybe a perfect storm creates an emotional bond once in a blue moon, but I guarantee Chet will be in the draft barring some act of god or injury if he is a consensus top 5 pick.

I am sure he does. I just remember a ton of guys passing up on sure early draft positions to go back. Grant Hill, Larry Johnson, the Manning Brothers, Eric Montross, Tim Duncan, all the Florida guys that stayed to repeat.. David Robinson was offered as a sophomore to drop out of the Naval Academy. I could probably think of even more. Add NIL money to it, it just makes it more tempting to stay.
I think you are a bit off here. There are lots of guys that dream of doing big things in college. There are a ton of pro athletes that love coming back to campus too. Alot will tell you it was the best time of their lives. It's sad to me that guys feel that they have to rush to the pros. How many career ending injuries are there in basketball? I could see that argument in football. Not in basketball though..

If he’s picked in the top 3 he’ll be considered a bust. He’s not that good.
