Long-time Basketball fans - how do you watch a game?

As someone who hasn't followed basketball that closely, I'm curious if those who are long-time fans watch it the same way as I watch, say football or soccer.
Do you mostly just follow the ball, do you sometimes pick one player and watch him when he is on ball and off ball? When your favorite team is on defense, do you see who is positioned to maybe start a fast-break in the event of a turnover? Do you watch to see how two players mesh together, say on a pick and roll or setting up for an alley-oop?
Do you mentally compile stats during the course of the game? At any given time, can you say how many fouls each player has? How many points, assists and rebounds?

I mostly follow the ball unless there is a match up on the court that I am interested in watching.

I just watch the Ebb and flow of the game. Usually when someone starts to catch fire you can kind of anticipate what's going to happen.
I do enjoy a good defensive stop that transition to a fast break OP with a chance of a highlight.

Basketball is weird. Ball movement is usually between two extremes: either one player holds the ball for the entire possession (Harden and the Rockets) or the ball flies around the court faster than the defense can respond (death lineup Warriors).
As a result of that, I watch games differently for different teams. There’s no point watching anyone other than Harden for 90% of the time for Rockets games but it’s perfectly fine to matchup watch for Warriors games because any player can get the ball at any time.

This year, dont blink on offense.
It's hard not to follow the ball.
It is much easier to do that in soccer than it is basketball. Positioning wise just based on the wide scope you get of the camera angle. Its easy to say ok my boy is about to sprint and blow by the defender bc the turnover typically happens slower. On an NBA fast break there is nothing you can do but sit back and watch 3 seconds of speed.
If you watch it on Fox, they show more stats than ESPN. Especially fouls. Bc they are mainly focused on the Peicans whereas ESPN is trying to be more unbiased. Although Joel Meyers is the GOAT announcer, he is very good at giving credit where credit is due. You can tell he really really loves the Pelicans and is supportive of each player, even bench guys that the board hates. But he will show love for an opposing team and quality basketball in general. I love listening to him call a game.
I cant think of anything special that I do while watching other than I like to play coach and give some attention to detail with lineups. I dont mind Gentry, but he throws out some ridiculous lineups sometimes and is HORRIBLE and stopping momentum the other team gains. I am a believer in calling a timeout when a team goes on a 8-10 nothing run. It drives me nuts that Gentry will let teams go on 14 nothing runs without calling a timeout.

So you liked basketball in the 90s?

I pay attention to various aspects of the game at various times. Sometimes ball watching, sometimes watching specific players. It really depends. On an in-bounds play for example, I'm watching the motion of the offensive off ball players to see who they are trying to get open, and how they are trying to do that.
I also tend to have a box score of the game up while watching to track stats, fouls, etc...
