A very innovative producer. Probably wouldn't have Sgt. Pepper without him.

You must have watched the CBS news this morning with the bit on the recording of the Sgt. Pepper's album (like I did).
I agree they would not have been as innovative without Martin. An example from an interview I looked up:
Things like that and adding the string quartet to "Yesterday" when the other Beatles suggested Paul just do it solo on guitar.

quote:
Then there was “Eleanor Rigby.”
“My approach was greatly influenced by Bernard Herrmann and his film score for “Psycho,” Martin said. “He had a way of making violins sound fierce. That inspired me to have the strings play short notes forcefully, giving the song a nice punch. If you listen to the two, you’ll hear the connection.”

No chance.
Martin was the perfect mentor (classicly trained with an appreciation of Tin Pan Alley) to get the boys to consider, explore and incorporate new (and old) sounds in rock music.
In fact you could make the case there wouldn't have been Beatlemania without him.
He got them to speed up "Please Please Me" from their usual waltz tempo to the tempo that created their first #1 and subsequent hits that became the classic Beatlemania sound. And without Beatlemania they would have never broken big in the states and could have easily become just another band nobody ever heard of.

A necessary piece of the puzzle

The "doo-wop" "shamma lamma ding dong" era was waning in favor of folk music and a blend of country and western. American rock-n-roll had become pop candy, with songs like "The Loco Motion", "The Twist", "Tossin and Turnin", "Raindrops", etc.
Top hits of 1961, for instance, included "Crying" by Roy Orbison, "I Fall to Pieces" by Patsy Cline, "Calcutta" by Lawrence Welk. Not exactly hard-hitting stuff.
The Beatles came out with a whole new vigor, making even Bob Dylan say that he'd forgotten his original calling and wanted to jam like those guys were doing.
Beatlemania was created by a generation starved for more energetic music than the American scene was producing.

They were in the right place at the right time....not only did he play a major influence on the creative side of their music....without him they wouldn't have lasted as long as they did as a group

Or Ginger Baker.
BTW, he (Baker) also hates everyone. I just read a quote he made about the Who and he hated the entire band.
Guy's nuts.

Probably not. They had Phil Spector for Let It Be and a lot of it was total shite.

This has been variously debated over the years. There's no telling what Beatles we might have gotten without Martin. The dawn of the age of psychedelia and protest had as much to with their unparalleled success as did Martin's lavish studio flourishes -which are on the whole admittedly brilliant.
In the end, it is the mesh of extraordinary songwriting and unimaginable melodies that changed the world and made them legends.

But an accomplished musician. He's not willy nilly when criticising, BTW. It's not, or doesn't seem to be personal. He's simply a bit chafed. Plus, his 'efferfescent' natural personality, LOL.

No I know, he's a talented guy but he literally hates everyone. He seems to think everyone is below him.
