I'm partial to the version that SRV did at the El Mocambo in Toronto. That one version is my favorite of either Jimi or Stevie. He was on fire that night (and I'm having trouble finding it on youtube, so apologies for no link). However overall, Jimi probably did it better.

Hendrix died. It will always make people get close to him. The unknown. What could a 35 year old Hendrix have done with Little Wing after being bored with it? Would he have got pissed over time as people got more technical? He played more distorted. That's what the times called for, but when SRV and others before stripped things down so you could hear each note, what would Hendrix have done?

I assume he'd say " I am Jimmy Hendrix BITCH!! You haven't heard technical yet!?" I assume Yngvwie Malmsteen but listenable and musical and melodic.

I'll just say that, IMO. Hendrix was revolutionary, SRV was evolutionary. SRV had a clearer path to follow.

I'd say the best Little Wing, however, is Duane Allman & Eric Clapton on the Derek & the Dominos cut.

I can't concur with that. SRV's soulfullness is all that song needs.

As much as I love SRV, his version of Voodoo Child comes across as nothing but a really good cover version. He doesn't make it his own like he did with Little Wing. And I think that has to do with how much SRV thought of Jimi. I honestly don't think he could bring himself to really let loose on that particular track.

Jimi was on fricking fire when he recorded the original Voodoo Child. Nobody's ever managed to recapture that magic with that song.

SRV's tone and deftness allows hi to own Little Wing. Plus, Jimi's version is hampered by the limits of studio tech at the time. There's a depth to SRVs version that Jimi's just doesn't have. And Jimi's version is cluttered with effects whereas SRV's is more sparse yet more rich at the same time.
