Close but no cigar. The general line on it is that Mark Arm coined the term but it was back when he was in Green River which predates Mudhoney. He said it and then the SubPop record label started calling the bands on their roster grunge and it took off from there.

It's funny to even mention Nirvana and Pearl Jam because by the time of their popularity the term had already become passe amongst Seattle bands.
