In many ways, I think the pop punk bands of the early 2000’s resemble the hair bands of the late 80’s in the niche they played in music. They were pop bands that girls liked that were just “hard” enough for boys to admit liking too. They wrote catchy songs about love and wore really silly clothes and hair styles.

There will always be a niche for fun music. Right now, Bro-country is filling that niche, but pop punk seems to be making a big nostalgia come back.

I was born in 85 and it still wasn’t for me. The way you just described it is likely the reason why . FTR I’m not saying it was all bad but the majority of it was pretty lame. To each his own though

Yeah 90’s is in right now like 80’s was a few years ago. I see a lot of tweens liking punk though it does capture some angst and youth coming of age stuff, but I’ll also be the first to admit I don’t listen to it outside of my close friends who also connect with it

I'm guessing this is nostalgia for the JNCO, chain wallet, Stussy hat, punk haircut crowd. Hilarious to me, but I get it.

It’s certainly becoming more popular again, with MGK’s two albums being pop punk and hitting #1 both times, Olivia Rodrigo having pop punk songs, Billie Ellish doing a performance with Hayley Williams, it feels like the Gen Z kids might be picking it up which is how you actually reignite a genre because it’s teens that really have the power

Holy fricking shite. That’s so much of my formative years. I’ll be 42 and I actually make this trip
