Townes Van Zandt will take the claim. Also covered by his protege Steve Earle. But Earle’s is better.

Supposedly, it’s very hard to sing and play the song solo at the same time. So, we have to give Townes the respect he deserves.
Steve sings it normally as a duo:

Townes guitar playing is more soulful and his vocals are more weary. Earle's version is a clean, emotionless copy. Give me Townes.
