The Cars - Nightspots Live 1978

Huge Cars fan here... Candy-O is a fricking masterpiece. Bag of Donuts was supposed to do an all Cars cover show after Ocasek died... but COVID-19 fricked that up. His death really got me. Not only was his music great, he produced so many great records for other bands I love. Dude was a beast!

Just sayin they completely changed their sound. Never understood why.
like the Doobie Brothers when Michael McDonald came on board. From Rock and Roll to schlock pop.

They definitely transitioned from a bit edgy, new wave style, to a more pop sound. The pop stuff was, well, popular. I liked it okay, but I preferred the older stuff.

The Police did the same thing. When they went more pop, the sold $$$$. It was great stuff, but the older albums had a different vibe.

There is that long final interview with the original members of the band while Orr was very sick, just a few months before the end. It's tough to watch at times and he didn't say much, but there is a touching moment in there. The interviewer asked Ocasek, "How did you decide who would sing which songs?" Rick responded, kind of glancing at Orr, "If I felt a song needed a stronger voice, I would give it to Ben."

As a Cars fan, that kind of hit me in the feels. Bare, vulnerable honesty. A band has a frontman/leader/lead singer. He plays a little rhythm guitar, but his job is to write songs and sing lead vocals and he admits his bass player was a better singer than he was - in front of everyone. And it wasn't bullshite - it was the God's honest truth.

I've gone on some deep Youtube dives with the Cars. They have some great old live performances. They are one of my favorite bands of all time and I pretty much like all of their stuff, even their newer "poppier" stuff.

I can watch their "Just What I Needed" performance on Midnight Special over and over.

Elliot Easton is one of the most underrated guitarists of all time, probably because of the style of music they played, but he had such a unique style that really isn't replicated anywhere.
