As a singer Marty Robbins has to be in the conversation. Great writer and entertainer too, but the man could sing anything from jazz to crooner to rock to country and the western cowboy songs he was most associated with.
I have always thought his voice was underrated. Check out Merle Haggard doing his best Marty Robbins impersonation.

Merle could impersonate almost all the old timey guys. It was one of the first things he was known for - in fact, David Allen Cole is doing a riff on that in, "You Don't Have to Call My By My Name" - where he impersonates his contemporaries, including Merle.

I did not know that until recently, and I could not believe how good he was at it.

Marty Robbins is up there too and I would have him in a tie with George Strait
I like Strait, but Marty Robbins is a much better singer, all day, every day.
