Adapt to your own definition, but keep it real.

Who's on your list?

1. Jim Croce
2. Don McLean
3. Billy Joel
4. Cat Stevens
5. Harry Chapin

No females come to mind. Feel free to work them in.

If you would go all the way back to 1950 you would fine dozens of male and female stars doing material from the Great American Songbook as well as numerous C & W artists. It would be difficult to narrow down a top 5.

Kafka, can you set this poster straight ?

I see Sinatra as more of a crooner. His main-stay was old standard pieces. To each his own.

I'm also partial to singers who wrote their own stuff.

On the female side, I'll throw in Joan Baez and Judy Collins.

Yes, I saw your list as more of a favorite singer/songwriter list than balladeer, although they all sing great ballads.

As far as singers, I'd throw in Billie Holiday and Nat King Cole as all-timers.

I think one of the more overlooked singer/balladeers of the last 40 years is James Ingram.

Marty Robbins, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash. Dolly Parton were all pretty good at telling a story with country music. Don McLean was good too.
