In 1990 I dated a tennis player from England (Blackpool) at Midland college (midland, Tx) she had tapes from home of the radio station so I would use my Walkman and listen. Smiths, Stone Roses so many more but I am old and forget. It BLEW my mind that this was out there. She got me tapes the next time she went home of just hours of their radio station. Plus I bought a bunch of stuff. 80/90 British music was going hard

I wasn't trying to pull a "but akshually"
I was really checking myself to make sure I was not misremembering their popularity.
I just listened to a Smith's documentary on Youtube and perhaps it influenced my perception.
But I was a freshman at LSU in the mid 80s and everyone I knew loved the Smiths and listened to them all the time.
In my mind they were just as popular as The Cure, and for a time they probably were, but the Smiths broke up and only had 4 studio albums while the Cure has had 13 studio albums and is still touring and even has a new album coming out.

I had a similar experience at around the same time/age. That’s why I was amazed at how many smaller venues they played, despite their perceived (my own perception included) popularity.

4 studio albums, and just 3 years after they released the first album, they were done. Strangeways was released months after they announced the break up. 73 songs overall in just over 3 years. Very prolific in terms of high quality material in such a short period of time.
