Is there another song out there that has such a innocent sound but dark evil meaning? The la la la la la la part always cracks me up when I hear it.

The lyrics were written by the film director's son to the tune written by Johnny Mandel. In a classic case of unintended consequences, Robert Altman (legendary film director, got sort of a second career after M*A*S*H which was a huge hit) didn't know what he wanted out of the song other than he wanted it to be called "Suicide is Painless" and for it to be the "stupidest song ever." He initially tried to write the song himself, but found he couldn't write "stupid enough" at 45. So, he asked his 14-year old son to write the lyrics, who did so reportedly in 5 minutes. As the song came out so well, it was elevated from being merely the dentist's suicide theme to the main theme of the film.
As the song became a huge hit, too, Mike Altman, the "stupid" 14-year old made over $1 million for 5 minutes of work. Robert only made $70k for directing the entire film. So that begs the question - who was really the stupid one?

I've always thought the music and the harmonies fit very well with the lyrics. It's a very intriguing song no matter how many times you hear it.

Great info. As a side note, the character the song is sung to in the movie is the camp dentist nicknamed "Painless" if I recall correctly. A sort of double entendre with the title of the song.
