Jerry Garcia, Tony Rice, & David Grisman
quote:

Legend has it that a pizza delivery boy lifted Jerry Garcia's cassette tape of two evenings worth of very special music from his kitchen counter, thus paving its way into underground tape trading circles and giving a handle to these incredible performances. Now at last, from the vaults of Dawg Studios comes the sonically superb official release of this historic jam session, the only meeting of guitar greats Jerry Garcia and Tony Rice, introduced to each other by their mutual friend and musical associate, mandolinist/ producer David Grisman. The Pizza Tapes capture these virtuosos at a rare moment in time, free of pressure, hassles or any given agenda other than making music and having plenty of fun.

nugs:

Long Black Veil

Shady Grove

Rosalee McFall

Guitar Space>Summertime

Garcia+Grisman is the greatest noodle of all noodles

The rest are available on youtube and i'll post a DL link if anybody wants one.

I remember listening to this for a month straight after it came out. Really good stuff.

I must say though, Jerry's playing when compared to Rice is pretty rough. Rice is an amazing acoustic guitar player though.

It is fantastic stuff. Tony Rice is a guitar picking sumbitch.

probably my favorite out of these recordings. I really enjoyed Long Black Veil as well.

Grateful Dawg is just so soothing to listen to. And having Rice in the mix makes it that much better.

Side note: if you haven't seen the Grateful Dawg documentary, I recommend it. Pretty good stuff

He plays percussive chops through a lot of the songs and keeps the beat while Jerry and Tony Rice go at it. Chopping g, c and d may not be the jammingest licks on a mandolin but it's a perfect fit in this trio and lots of acoustic/bluegrass jams. To say "Grisman fricking sucks" is retarded.

I'm pretty sure that is right before House of the Rising Son. I really love how personal the Grateful Dawg records are.
