The Weavers - Wreck of the John B aka The John B Sails or Sloop John B
Earliest recording I could find of it...
Although, this is the version that the Beach Boys were covering...

Exile - Heart and Soul
Huey Lewis and the News cover of Heart and Soul
The Huey Lewis version is the one that became a hit, but he didn't really change much from the original.

Roaring Lion - "Ugly Woman" (1934)
Robert Mitchum (!!!) - "From A Logical Point Of View" (1957)
Jimmy Soul - "If You Wanna Be Happy" (1963)
If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life
Never make a pretty woman your wife
So from my personal point of view
Get an ugly girl to marry you
Now THAT is poetry

The original version of "Let's Live For Today" was by the Italian Beat group The Rokes with Italian lyrics: "Piangi Con Me"
Lyrics were rewritten into English and the song became a big hit for The Grass Roots. The Living Daylights also released the first English language version in the UK before the Grass Roots too I believe.

Interesting -- I've heard of The Rokes but was unfamiliar with this story
Actually they were English and recorded in Italian

Spooky Tooth - "Better By You, Better Than Me"
Judas Priest - "Better By You, Better Than Me"
Spooky Tooth wrote it, but Judas Priest had to defend themselves in court from charges of being responsible for the deaths of two teens, who referenced the songs lyrics in a suicide note.

Vikki Carr - "He's A Rebel" (1962)
Supposedly Phil Spector heard this pre-release -- whether on a demo or by attending the session is unclear -- and immediately rushed into the studio to cut a competing version. His successful group The Crystals was on tour, so he used session singer Darlene Love -- but still credited the Crystals on the record.
This version went to #1, while Carr's original could not crack the top 100
'The Crystals' (aka Darlene Love & The Blossoms) -- "He's A Rebel"
Despite Spector's presence the big difference between the two is the vocal. Carr, trained as a pop singer (she would go on to have a very successful MOR career), carefully enunciates every word. Love is more interested in communicating emotion.

Yeah, they were English transplants. Quite a lot of English musicians moved to Italy in the 60s where they found the scene less overcrowded with beat groups and overflowing with beautiful girls.
"Italian Beat," for this reason, often refers more broadly to bands that simply lived and recorded in Italy. In addition to The Rokes, The Motowns (Lally Stott) and The Primitives all had some English members and were among the most famous Italian Beat groups of the era.
I Kings, who were in my opinion, probably the best Italian garage band (with apologies to I Corvi) unsurprisingly had an American member.

Sorry, quick hijack... were you familiar with Flor De Mal?
They covered GP's Juanita on a compilation I have and have never heard much more of them...
Flor De Mal - Juanita (live)
sounds close to the studio version I have
ok, sorry Kafka...

I have what's probably their first 7" inch somewhere but haven't heard much else though I think they put out three LPs altogether. It's pretty cool jangle guitar pop, very LA-ish. I don't really know a lot about them though aside from that they were from Catania.
