On my perfect songs list. So much emotion in that vocal and incredible atmospherics-

You will see light in the darkness
You will make some sense of this
And when you've made your secret journey
You will find this love you miss

Great album.

My favorite tracks are Spirits in the Material World and Invisible Sun.

The album is probably underrated - obviously, Spirits in the Material World, Every Little Thing She Does is Magic and Invisible Sun are the major single tracks (for the U.S. audience, anyway). Demolition Man had already been a hit for Grace Jones.

Secret Journey did chart in 1982.

Darkness was the only Stewart Copeland composition on GITM.

Invisible Sun is indeed awesome. Only ome single crash cymbal on beat 1 in the entire song.

It's definitely underrated and in my opinion the best Police album. Sting's bass line on Darkness is simple as can be but fits the song perfectly. Again on Spirits in the Material World, the bass line is very simple but catchy. I love how new parts get added in every verse to create a multi-layered sound by the end of the song. Each part is simple in itself but they intertwine into a complexity that you almost don't even notice. Invisible Sun is another of my favorites on that record.

Well Sting isn't known for his overly complicated basslines for sure.

He catches crap for that, but recall:

1. The Police was started as a New Wave/Punk-lite outfit.

2. As the primary composer, Sting knew he was going to have to play those parts while singing, live.

3. The music didn't require/wouldn't have benefitted much from more complex bass parts.

I mean, not everyone can be Geddy Lee or Jack Bruce.

They had Stewart Copeland. Is bass even required at all?

Summers's haunting guitar is primordial.

This is surprising to me. I consider myself a Police fan, and I don't like this album much at all.
