Actually, you are missing the point.
Hard Rock has also been called Cock Rock, in that it appeals primarily to young dudes by expressing their point of view whether through blues, rage, rebellion against authority, fricking, getting high, wizards/goblins/swords/demons, partying, etc...
Nickelback sings lyrics that you could easily imagine a 14 y/o girl saying at a slumber party. "Hey look at this photograph, everytime it makes me laugh & giggle". "OMG, Jenny, why are our eyes so red? Was that the time we smoked that joint? (giggles)" Rachel, you will not believe what was on Joey's head: my mother's pantyhose. OMG, He is so funny!"
There is no such thing as "regular" rock n roll. There's 50's Rock, 60's Rock, British Invasion Rock, Singer-Songwriter Rock, Dixie Southern Rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Folk Rock, Glam Rock, Punk Rock, Country Rock, Thrash Rock, Death Rock, blah, blah, blah etc, etc. Hard Rock can practically be traced back to the Beatles Helter Skelter. There may have been predecessors, but the Beatles made it acceptable.
Nickelback is in between Hard Rock (Zeppelin) & pure Pop Rock (Maroon 5). Their prominent guitar sound & loud raspy voacals are too hard & loud to classify them in the pure pop rock category, so they are automatically shifted to Hard Rock genre, just like Bon Jovi was. Whether you want to accept this or not, this is what the discriminating public is judging them on.
They are trying to be a hard rock sounding band using formulaic melodies & grit-less lyrics that appeals to a girl's point of view for commercial success. Thus, there are a bunch of dudes who can't relate & whole-heartedly dislike them.
Edit: This is where the alternative rock category comes in. But they they don't have the edge or angst that drove alt rock Grunge Era of the 90's. It sounds like alt rock (which is a derivative of Hard Rock), but has absolutely no lyrical grit & too refined to be a grunge garage band. So they call it post-grunge alt rock, and Nickelback is the poster-boy for what many dudes think is wrong with today's rock scene.

I agree with this part.

I strongly disagree with this. The lyrics are insanely simple. and even if i cant "relate" its only one part of the band. and a small part at that.
The lead singer always sings in the same key and follows the same melody - no matter the genre, that is a problem in music in general.
The guitar is repetitive and boring - same melody every song, nickle back has only done songs in like 3 keys. They are a very repetitive similar sounding band from CD to CD.
The Bass - do they have one? if so it is so repetitive and monotonous I've never noticed it.
Drums - see Bass comment.
They are terrible. And it is for so much more than the just the lyrics.
That said, I agree with every you said analyzing the lyrics and the reason behind their simplicity.

I'm not being a troll, but i think this is wrong. There are a lot of grown men who love hard rock. It tends to express a rebellious, gettin high, partyin, angry sound and lyrics and that goes with any age. There are plenty of 50 year old die hard "hard rock" fans.
To sum up:

They are trying to be a hard rock sounding band using formulaic melodies & grit-less lyrics that appeals to a girl's point of view for commercial success.
I agree with this 100% and they suck for so many more reasons than just there lack of genre and junk lyrics.

just read this post. You are spot on with the Nickleback breakdown.

Hell, Rock was founded on estrogen-driven lyrics with Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, and the Beatles.
I think you are off about 15 years on your example. Elvis should be in place of the Beatles if you are talking music for the ladies.
The Beatles got their name from Buddy Holly and the Crickets

Actually, you are missing the point.

Hard Rock
They are not Hard rock, nor are they trying to be. Just basic rock and roll.
quote:
Nickelback sings lyrics that you could easily imagine a 14 y/o girl saying at a slumber party.
I had a giiiiirl
And Doooooonna was her name
Since she met meeeeee
I've never been the same.
---------------
Well East coast girls are hip
I really dig those styles they wear
And the Southern girls with the way they talk
They knock me out when I'm down there
----------------
I'm alone, yeah, I don't know if I can face the night
I'm in tears and the cryin' that I do is for you
I want your love
Let's break the walls between us
Don't make it tough
I'll put away my pride
Enough's enough
I've suffered and I've seen the light
-----------------
I could go on. You can find simple lyrics for any band, if you pick and choose.
You can't hate a band, because they aren't Maynard or Duritz. That's why we appreciate Maynard and Duritz.
quote:Sure there is. . .I would say bands like Bon Jovi, Van Halen, DL Roth, etc. fit the bill. Many other bands fit the bill at various points in their careers.
There is no such thing as "regular" rock n roll.
quote:Which is where you find regular rock and roll.
Nickelback is in between Hard Rock (Zeppelin) & pure Pop Rock (Maroon 5).
quote:This is where you are wrong. They are not trying to be anything other than Nickelback.
They are trying to be a hard rock
People who aren't into them, cool. But people actually actively hating them?
Bandwagon fad.

quote:So do most all rock singers.
The lead singer always sings in the same key and follows the same melody
It's why we appreciate the great vocalists.
quote:Another common element in rock music.
nickle back has only done songs in like 3 keys.
quote:In rock, the bass' main objective is to accentuate the drummer. They are usually invisible and interchangeable.
The Bass - do they have one? if so it is so repetitive and monotonous
The ones you recognize readily are the truly great bassists. You can't hate a band for not being great. That is a ridiculous metric.
quote:I actually think their drummer is pretty talented.
Drums - see Bass comment.
I think most people are summing up by saying they are too generic. That I'd agree with. . .but that's their sound.
And for anyone saying every song sounds the same. . .that is more true than not about many rock bands.
Hell, it was the chief reason I stopped listening to Bush in the 90's. Some bands find a sound and stick to it. I can appreciate that, but don't particularly like it.
Nickelback's music doesn't sound identical, but their vocals do. . .and that is problematic, since their music seems to exist to feature the vocalist. It is why I am not a big fan.
Nickelback is not a great band, but they are not terrible. They are good at what they do. . .

I also blame Nickelback and Creed for goatee's and barbwire/tribal tattoo's, as well as the death of rock radio

This!!!!
This is exatcly what I was trying to say in my ealier post. It's not just Nickleback, but they seem to stand out and lead the way. Current Rock music sucks bad. ( the current form of country music also sucks if you care for my opinion)
