quote:Some people judge a band's talent on how close their shows sounds like their albums. To hell with ingenuity, improvisation, and variation (not referring to MuteMath; their live shows are great). There's a reason people follow jam bands on tour; no 2 shows are the same. I like a different story/journey every show, I like not knowing what to expect, I like being surprised by a setlist, I like bands playing covers that tweak and sometimes completely re-envision a song, and I like people blending various songs into a completely new animal. I don't see how you can be a musician and NOT appreciate what these people do. IMO, there is nothing boring about a jamband, there is only people who don't have the attention span and patience to watch something truly awesome develop over a half hour span. I have no desire to go to a show just so I can sing along to a song that I've heard a million times and sounds just like it does on the album but with shittier singing. I appreciate and enjoy spontaneity in musicianship.
So what's up with all your angst towards jam bands?

Yes. Jambands don't have to be "hippie". Have you ever seen Mogwai live? They are a jamband. Sorry.

Even Comity (death metal) could probably be considered a jamband.

Boring. Not a good guitar player. What degree does he have?
Posted on 8/1/12 at 12:49 pm to Blue Velvet
He has a degree in music from Goddard College.

Actually it is in creative writing.
Which is funny because his senior thesis, Gamehendge, tells a story. Kind of like what TheDoc was bitching about them not doing earlier.

Now, just what is going on in here?

Then you don't know what jam is.

You don't understand what a jamband is.

There is no definition of "jam band." You think if you asked Phish their genre they would really use that term?
Any band that jams (live improv) could fit the subcategory. The only thing I wouldn't count would be jazz since that is the originator.

quote:Exactly. A post rock jam band. I'm glad you agree. There are electronic, metal, folk, post rock, country, blues, psychedelic rock and many other genres that feature extended musical improvisation ("jams"). Both post rock and jam band are genres attributed to Mogwai. They are awesome, BTW.
