They did tours for a couple of years then stopped to become a primarily studio act. That's why Skunk Baxter left to join the Doobie Brothers.

I don't know if it was a major tour but I saw them at La Tech in 72' or 73'.

Anyway, the rumor is that the name Steely Dan was constructed from hundreds which were spit out of a record exec computer report, upon entering parameters for frequency of use, recognizability, initial cognitive associations, etc.........
