I've thought about picking up banjo for a couple of years and I figure now is as good a time as any since I'm stuck at home. What do the Earl Scruggses of the music board suggest? I don't want a complete piece of shite but I'm not looking to quit my day job in pursuit of banjo either. In a non-diseased world, I would prefer used but that's not going to happen. Looking to spend less than $500

My brother learned on a Deering Goodtime banjo. Not sure what those run price wise but the quality seemed good.

I have a Fender Rustler open back that I got cheaply on a Musicians Friend stupid deal of the day that does the job.

Just buy a open back to start if you want to save money and will just be playing around the house. They are a lot of options for simple open back Banjo’s under 500
Then you can go buy you a resonator banjo with a tone ring if you decided you want to be earl scruggs for real
