They make great USB audio interfaces these days. I have a focusrite scarlett. I just hook it into my computer via usb them demo everything on there. You'll need to invest in some decent mics if you plan on miking a guitar amp, snare drum ect. A Shure SM57 is a great do it all mic to get you started.
You need basic knowledge of protools or whatever program you're gonna be using but it isn't hard. The more you do it the better everything will sound.

Cool, man. You've got a distinct voice and sound. Wish I could could play guitar as well as you do.
river_man--Are you a Nick Drake fan?

That really has a doors vibe to it,except more guitar and no keyboard.
I am going to try and use that sound cloud thingy..but I can't figure out how to copy from The CD onto my computer, I have never done it before, and my wife's not home to show me

Thanks bro
I do love Nick Drake, but when I came up with the username, believe it or not, I wasn't even thinking about his song, which is a great tune. I live on the Miss River, so that's where it came from.

It's been a minute since I uploaded one, but I think you have to convert the song that's on CD to mp3 form, and then post it on soundcloud. There's free mp3 converters that you can get online. Use google. Looking forward to hearing something.
The Doors are a top 3 band of mine all time, thanks for the compliment!

well..most everything I do is acoustic, more old country or americana genre, only use electric a little bit.
On this recorder, I can plug my guitars straight in and ad effects and customize the sound when mixing down. It's got 8 tracks, with another dedicated track for programmed drums, supposedly you can use V-tracks and actually have 64 tracks, but 8 is plenty for what I am doing. I have some pretty good mics and stuff.
I think when I learn my way around it,it will be good enough for song demos.

I'm not a huge Drake fan, but there a couple songs of his (River Man, From the Morning, Three Hours and Pink Moon) that are as good as it gets in pop music.
I wish I could write a song half as good as Pink Moon--between the sparse music and a handful of words, he creates some of the most vividly thought-provoking images I've come across in nearly 60 years of listening to music.
And the song's under two minutes!

Oh yeah, those recorders are good.

I'm with you. If you're looking for the sound of truth--literally, what truth sounds like in the form of music--you'll find it in that style of music.
I'm also a big fan of old British/Irish/Scots folk music, stuff from the 18th, 19th centuries.

I can come up with a verse, a chorus, a hook, or a title, but I can't get them all together.

I really like using some of their different guitar tunings sometimes,it can really help to break out of a tired rut.

Three chords and the truth, brah!

Well, I guess I will have to let my wife do this tomorrow when she's home.
I really want to get feedback on some songs.

years ago, i used to go to songwriter seminars, classes, stuff like that. I think the most important thing that I learned. If you have a good hook, create a story in your head that is relative to that.
Try to make your lyric conversational, not too poetic, but try to paint a picture with words, about the person(s)in the song and let the hook pull it all together.Sometimes you can use a bridge to resolve it,if you can't do it all in the chorus.

I can't write music, so I'm talking lyrics here. Might also help to have someone to bounce things off, also.

Do you play an instrument? If not,it would be good to team up with somebody that can.
As far as bouncing lyric ideas, this might be a good place to do it. If you post some lyrics here, save a screen shot of it,so it shows the date and time.
It never hurts to protect your material.

You aint got to be good man,if you can put 5 chords together, you can write complete songs. The better you get on the guitar though,it will help you write the words, because when you make a twist musically,it will inspire you to make a twist lyrically, and twists are really advisable.

My band is hoping to get in the studio in the next few months and put out an ep. We've been writing a ton of music .
