Death Cab For Cutie - I Will Posses Your Heart is about a stalker, not a lover.

Same for Sarah McLachlan's "Possession"... She paraphrased an obsessed fan's letters to her. He tried to sue her and lost. Later he committed suicide and sent her the note attached to flowers backstage at a concert.

i was going to post this same is also true of "every breath you take"...i think a lot of stalker songs are probably mistaken for love songs by people who don't really listen to the lyrics.

I was gonna joke with you in the other thread (5 songs from your music library) about wagering money you had Sarah McLachlan in your library based on the list you had.

I googled all the songs on your list.

Definitely a safe bet. I've got everything from Loreena McKennitt and Cowboy Junkies to Queensryche and Metallica.

ETA:

I do lean heavy on my female vocalists, though.

Just what exactly is that song about?

I thought it was about some kid doing one of those mass shootings.

ETA: And on that note I had some friends that didn't know Pearl Jam's Jeremy was based on a true story about a kid going to school and shooting himself in front of the class. It happened someplace in Texas if I remember correctly. That was before Columbine gave kids the idea to take other people out with them before they committed suicide.

quote:

This song is about a boy who kills himself at school to get revenge on the students who tormented him. It is based on the true story of Jeremy Delle, a 16 year old who killed himself in front of his English class at Richardson High School in Richardson, Texas on January 8, 1991. Eddie Vedder found out about Jeremy when he read an article an article about the incident in the Dallas Morning News, which read: "Because he had missed class, the teacher in his second-period English class told Jeremy to get an admittance slip from the school office. Instead, he returned with the gun, police said. He walked directly to the front of the classroom. 'Miss, I got what I really went for,' he said, then placed the barrel in his mouth and fired." The article adds that three Richardson students committed suicide in 1988.

The Police's "every breath you take" is about big brother gov't in England, not about a lover or stalker.

i think a lot of people mistakenly believed that he had shot other students, not himself.

That's OK with me. It's such a happy song!

ETA: I'd rather just think about Charlie trying to catch a peek of Harriet.

Word around the campfire was that it was about shooting heroin. But if pw says that is now debunked I will go with that.
