Someone told me recently that Duane Allman's guitar was too scratchy for him

Should I have:
1. Slapped him in the face
2. Punted him over a bridge to his death
3. Made him listen to Fillmore East over and over until he understood the magic
4. Taken a bunch of deep breaths and let it go
FWIW I chose #3. But I kind of wish I had done a combination of the first 3.
What would you have done?
