Such a beautifully crafted song.

Solsbury Hill

quote:

Climbing up on Solsbury Hill
I could see the city light
Wind was blowing, time stood still
Eagle flew out of the night
He was something to observe
Came in close, I heard a voice
Standing stretching every nerve
Had to listen had no choice
I did not believe the information
(I) just had to trust imagination
My heart going boom boom boom
"Son, " he said "Grab your things,
I've come to take you home."
To keep in silence I resigned
My friends would think I was a nut
Turning water into wine
Open doors would soon be shut
So I went from day to day
Tho' my life was in a rut
"Till I thought of what I'd say
Which connection I should cut
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."
Back home
When illusion spin her net
I'm never where I want to be
And liberty she pirouette
When I think that I am free
Watched by empty silhouettes
Who close their eyes but still can see
No one taught them etiquette
I will show another me
Today I don't need a replacement
I'll tell them what the smile on my face meant
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" I said "You can keep my things,
They've come to take me home."

It tells an ethereal story that is difficult to grasp.

You know it is important, but can't pin down precisely why.

It is the metaphorical fork in the road.

Since it is his first solo hit and has been featured at every tour, there is a "live" video intercut 6 different performances over 35 years.

The song is about Gabriel's decision to leave Genesis. So, yes, the fork in the road.

That's the inspiration of the song, but lyrically the song isn't about that. The song is about a hill, city lights, eagles, and "liberty" imagined as a ballet dancer.

This is pretty straight-forward. The last 2 lines in particular echo his reasoning for leaving Genesis.

It's pretty straightforward when you know the factual background. Again, lyrically it pulls you into the decision-making process like you would drift into a dream. It feels like a rescue mission. "Take you home"? From where? And why?

And why would you be considered crazy for wanting to go home? Yeah, the money verse spells it out, but only if you know what all the soul searching was about. I mean, the song has bolstered me through a couple of career/life forks myself, but as a kid, I had no fricking idea it was about his decision to leave Genesis - I only came to that understanding much later.

And I believe he told them he was leaving when the tour for '... On Broadway' started. So they had that whole tour to know that this is it

I always thought that it was the more literate and musically interesting precursor to this song, released about 6 months later.

Both songs are about very similar subject matter, partially hidden in an allegory about escaping via supernatural/extraterrestrial means.
