I like thrash metal but Slayer was way too far on the satanic side for me.

Slayer but it is close..as far as Pantera having the best 5 metal albums ever is
they do not even have the best run of 5 albums in metal that would go to Iron Maiden

Compared to Anthrax and Metallica, of course they seemed to have more cult and blasphemous-tinged lyrics.
Then again, compared to subsequent bands like Morbid Angel, and even moreso Deicide, Slayer is relatively harmless.
The reason why that is so is because Slayer were never literal Satanists. Kerry has said before in past interviews that it was his way of inciting controversy and intrigue. He liked constructing violent imagery because it appealed to his own personal interests.
Meanwhile, Tom was raised Catholic. Although he clearly holds some resentment towards Catholicism, he has intimated in a number of interviews that it's just a bunch of bullshite and is as tongue-in-cheek as anything.
But I know what you mean. I was reluctant to purchase a Slayer record for a long time because my Baptist upbringing made me feel like I was doing something wrong or taboo by listening to such music.
