McCartney doesn't get enough credit for his bass playing because of playing for The Beatles and because he is much more than a "Bassist
A very fluid and melodic bass player. Definitely ahead of his time with his playing from ‘62-‘66. Nowhere Man and You Won’t See Me to name a few. Screaming up and down the neck doesn’t make you a great bassist.

Great find on the BPM article. But after reading that list of musicians, it's hard to justify McCartney as the third best bassist of all time.

Cliff Burton for us metal fans
I love Cliff and Metallica (obviously) but he gets way too much credit for actually being good. He just died. Dude was a metal bass player with nothing extraordinary or distinguishable about his talents. Was he better than Newstead - sure, but that doesn't make him best metal bassist of all time. He was good (and arguably the best bassist Metallica had vs Rob) but not legendary.
In this realm of metal, I'm going Steve Harris - the heart and soul of Iron Maiden even before Bruce Dickinson came along.

Edger Meyer probably is the right answer but It's not really my favorite
