Grantland had a pretty good article on this last year.

Looking at these two lists tells the whole story of what's happened to R&B. For the most part, in 2001, R&B artists were either standing alone or outsourcing a verse to a rapper to give it either (1) crossover, or (2) hood appeal. Over the 11-year period since, the tables have turned. Very rarely is a present-day R&B singer pulling a "Case" and singing verses and the chorus with no rapper to be found. As for the outsourcing process, it has become flipped, with the popular rappers of the day now giving the handouts to singers to croon their choruses. It's unfortunate how it happened so quickly and seamlessly.

Again, the news of this tour and new music is awesome for D'Angelo and the public, but arguably even bigger for R&B. This is what the genre sorely needs right now. One can only pray that the lead single on D'Angelo's new album isn't a club banger with Flo Rida and Calvin Harris. If that happens, then it's all over. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

To me, the Motown era was the best of R&B. The overuse of Motown music in movies and commercials has sort of dampened the legacy.

You have to include "Stax", and "Atlantic", too.

The same with today's country music...It's sad.
Both were strongest in the 60's & 70's.

If you are looking for R&B not heard on the radio check out the Robert Glasper project and his Black Radio series. The first album has been out a while and it's really good, I think Black Radio 2 drops on Itunes tomorrow. I expect it to be as good if not better than the first album.

i'm a HUGE r&b fan, at least 90/early 00's r&b from when i was growing up
i have a ton of it on my ipod and still listen to it - 112, jagged edge, keith sweat, aaliyah, ginuwine, dru hill, jodeci, and tons of others
would you guys consider The Weeknd r&b? him and the dream are 2 nowadays that i'd consider r&b or at least close enough to it
