Question about music rights

A lot of times on commercials or reality shows like Pawn Stars, I'll here an instrumental snippet that sounds distinctly like a particular rock or country song.
Do advertisers or TV shows pay anything to the original artist in order to use music like that, or can they get around it if the snippet is short enough or different enough?

They pay fees to the licensing agencies, BMI, ASCAP, and SESAC, then those agencies figure out how to disburse the royalties where it is owed.

I think your talking about the generic instrumental stuff where they try to make it sound like something. Such as Back in Black, Whole Lotta Love, ect.
In these cases they use guitar sounds/tones and production techniques to replicate another song. They change the notes and melody just enough to avoid paying royalties. If the creators hear it and feel it's too close to their work they can sue

If it's a "sound alike" track, then it comes from a company like Firstcom Music.

Yeah, that’s what I meant.
I didn’t know if there was some sort of lower tier royalty for that, or if they were just being clever enough.
When I’ve been involved in commercials, we just used generic stuff from whatever subscription service, so I didn’t know anything about sound alike music.
