Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy Guests on Debut of The Second City Variety Series for Topic
quote:
Move over SNL, The Second City is launching its own social distancing sketch comedy show. According to Deadline, the improvisational theatre troupe that launched the careers of Bill Murray, Stephen Colbert, Tina Fey, John Candy, Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, and Steve Carell, among many others, is putting together a half-hour sketch and variety limited series that will stream on Topic. The first episode of The Second City Presents: The Last Show Left on Earth bows Thursday, April 16, with host Jack McBrayer (30 Rock) and featured guest Wilco frontman, Jeff Tweedy.
Founded in Chicago in 1959, The Second City sparked a comedy revolution. The enterprise later opened theaters in Toronto and Los Angeles, launched training programs, and expanded into television with SCTV, The Second City Presents, and Next Comedy Legend.
The Last Show Left on Earth, co-created by Billy Bungeroth and Liz Kozak, brings together segments filmed remotely by The Second City’s alumni and friends. Expect a mash-up of original sketches, musical performances, animation, and rare footage from The Second City’s vault. Also, the show enlisted Andrew Bird, who has been prolific on social media during the coronavirus crisis, to compose an original theme song.
Jeff Tweedy will be the musical guest on the show’s inaugural episode. In an alternate COVID-19-free universe, Jeff would be in Mississippi tonight with Wilco amid a six-week North American tour. But instead, for the last four weeks, Jeff has been visiting with fans nightly via Instagram Live. As a quarantine morale booster, he and his family created a one-hour made-for-Instagram series called The Tweedy Show. Each episode finds Jeff, Susie, Spencer, and Sammy assembling to tell stories, answer fan questions, and play songs. Beginning this week, and for the foreseeable future, the family will broadcast every night except for Wednesday. You can watch the Tweedy show here at 10pm EDT/9pm CDT/7pm PDT.

Jeff Tweedy is an insufferable douche.

Mike Shinoda has been doing live streams on YouTube where he goes through the entire process of laying our a song. It's really cool to watch and he takes input from fans while he's doing it.

His guitar playing is unfathomable to me. So much going on - effortless it seems. I'd kill for those long arse fingers.

Here’s one my wife and I did with Jimbo Mathus (Squirrel Nut Zippers) in his Mosquitoville side project for Mother’s Day. It’s old timey traditional songs. All tips, etc...go to support Jimbo and his family as he relies only on his music for income. The rest of us have day jobs. Any kindness is much appreciated as times are hard for professional musicians.

Microconcerto number 24 ? Rockin’ it Up. Well, this is just a small fragment - and really not premeditated at all. But it’s the kind of sketch that I’ve been putting down on Walkman tape recorders and Philips N2011’s and pocket dictation machines for years if an idea like this came into my head, so that some day I could return and turn it into a song. So please feel welcome to call it #jamwithbri. But you might need to listen to it a few times to figure out its time signature, and where the ‘one’ is. It’s one of those riffs that fascinate me, which return to a different position in the bar every time they come around. So the riff might sound like 3/4 at first but in my head I’m counting 4 to the bar. It’s fun, I think. This is the kind of thing which goes around in ancient rock stars heads the whole time.

The Futurebirds have gathered back together as a band to put on a live stream from an Athens recording studio this Friday night. $10 a ticket. Their new album is really good and their tour got cancelled on the second night of the tour this spring. Check it out and help a touring band out. LINK
