i am scrolling through FB and NPR posts a story about a band named PWR BTTM... Im in disbelief that someone would name their band that.

Anyways, apparently right before their promising new album is going to drop, the lead has been accused of rape. Label drops them, venues cancel them, etc.

Apparently these allegations might not be true.

NPR story

That it's a reported volume of incidents and that people who are familiar with them dropped them so quick certainly leads to the suspicion that they too had seen questionable behavior and wanted to get out before it actually got ugly

If you read any indie music blogs/sites at all, it was impossible to miss this story. It's pretty crazy how quickly they plummeted from grace. They went, literally, from contenders for album of the year to pariahs in the indie blogosphere in the space of a few days. It was like watching a trainwreck in slow motion as things fell apart.

Anyway, the irony is that this band prided themselves as LGBT/Queer allies and advocates (hence the aggro gay name). You know.. the typical people who decry rape culture non stop.... so then to be accused of not only engaging in rape but ignoring the accusations... damn.

Live by the sword, die by the sword.

I'm curious since you seem more familiar.... the way it played out felt a lot like "everyone knows but nobody is saying anything.... and then someone said it"

It could just be hyper caution from all their corporate partners but it just felt like such strong and immediate reactions that it wasn't coming from a place of "look at this totally unexpected thing one person posted in a random FB group- we better move quick"

I think it was a combination of a few things.

1) A lot of their fanbase is from the SJW circle (I hate that term, because i do believe in social justice), which tends to have very knee jerk reactions.

2) It does seem like there were suspicions and rumors swirling around him before. AS you said, no one seemed surprised.

3) They came out with an initial statement that seemed really well-meaning at first, but within a day was shown to contain several inconsistencies and outright lies (they said no accusations or accusers had ever come forth. An accuser then detailed and showed proof that she'd come forward to the band a while back).

4) Their tour mates dropped off tour and a band member quit. That was sort of the final straw that completely turned the tide and seemed to lend credence to the allegations (as you said... we're presuming that these people weren't too surprised by the accusations and might even have had suspicions or knowledge of this sort of behavior).

Jesus Christ. Now their label is removing all of their music from all the streaming services.

Talk about being blacklisted.

They actually just pretty much sounded like a punk band with a little They Might Be Giants.
