1969. Many rock acts appeared on The Tonight Show in the '60s including Sam Cooke, The Byrds, and Paul Revere & The Raiders. This Youngbloods incident was the start of rock bands being blackballed from the show, which would last into the '80s (if you ever wondered why there aren't clips of rock bands on The Tonight Show in the '70s floating around, this is why).
